Any advice on closing the deal....found something I like that is on at 14,795 - what would be a reaonable discount, 14k? There is option of a 2 service deal of £200 at the main dealer garage. I’d like to get this thrown in too for the 14k. Is a cash buy, no px. Am I being unrealistic?

Would be interested to hear if any other women on this forum, especially if you’ve been out car buying alone, of your experiences - at best I get ignored and at worst I get sent emails to my husband or asked when he will be coming to look at the car (he doesn’t exist). Sorry for the mini rant, but seems to be breaking news to some car sales teams that women buy cars in the 21st century!

On a side note, does every car salesman say that they drive the exact model of car you are looking at, and that they previously owned what you do now?

You haven't even told us what car it is! Age? Spec? Mileage? Condition?

There is no reasonable discount figure. It depends on loads of things... How long they've had it in stock...how much interest they've had.... How is it priced against the rest of the market.... Etc etc

I could sell you a car listed for sale at 16k for 14k and you'd be happy wouldn't you? What if it was actually over priced and the rest of the market is selling around 13.5k? Wouldn't feel so good then would you?

You need to do your own research into sale prices for the model you are interested in.

Cash isn't king anymore these days. You'd get a better deal with a px or if taking finance (dealer can use the profit margin in these to sweeten the deal, can't do that if you buy fir cash)

Generally speaking, 1k off a 15k car (if originally priced competitively) is not realistic. You never know though....

Hi Bumbles,

These days a cash sale isnt all that attractive to Dealers as they make commission off the Finance companies. You'd probably secure a lower purchase price with it however that would soon be lost to APR!

What price they sell it to you depends on a lot of things! How long in stock, how much it owes them etc. If I were you id just go in a talk numbers, say what you want to pay for it and go from there, if you cant agree either cough up the extra or walk away. Often these things get built up in peoples head, just go in and talk.

They want to sell cars, you want to buy one!

Quick search shows that for less than £500 quid more, you can get an almost new one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

68 plate with 100 or so miles on it; absolute no brainer although you might one check for variations in spec compared to your one

Thanks for the link...I think that may be a different spec, but yes, for the price would be a no brainer on the '18 plate.

If anyone can find me a petrol, manual, leather heated seats with sat nav and aux input that would be helpful ;-)

Why dont you go to www.autotrader.co.uk and search there, that's where we all look. I particularly like the 'Keyword' part most useful, type in heated leather v40 t2 for example, there you find find all your options

The car at Watford you linked doesn't look like it has navigation, the nav equipped cars have a larger screen...

The Derby car is a 68 plate, it's pretty much new.

you are right the watford one has full leather, heated seats but not sat nav. Ideally I'd like both but if one has to go for my price range I'd rather loose the sat nav.
