Just after any general information on 230 SL's and wondering if there are any current owners on this board. Good mate at mine is looking to get one but is a little clueless about them (as am I!). Any links / recommendations etc gratefully received...

Have a look in Classic & Sportscar - there are several specialists in there including Michael Lavers (silver arrows) in Putney who seems to have a good reputation.

I`m no expert but, as with all classics, condition is all. Pagoda`s complicate this because they are inherently tough and well built and can hide all manner of horrors! A good one though is about as good an everyday classic as you will find.

280SL`s are the most popular and expensive. They are slightly younger, more grunty and a little bit softer. 230SL`s are the original and offer a more sporting drive. 250SL`s are, apparently, the ones to avoid because they have a slightly weak engine - whether this is justified I do not know. Manuals are also supposed to be avoided (as with all Merc`s).

There was a big pagoda feature in a recent Mercedes Benz Enthusiast magazine. It was either this month or last month, I can't remember which. There was a lot of buying info etc. There are also a few pagoda specialists who advertise in there. There's one in Silchester for example.

Cheers guys - been checking classic and sportscar / classic chrome etc and keeping an eye on the market.

he's also thinking 190SL but from the little Iknow I've suggested that the 230 /280 is a better proposition - it will be a cherished garaged second car though.

The silverarrows recommendation seems to be a good one - anyone know if they have a website - I've hunted all over but not found anything on google - jus phone numbers.....

230SL is a far more interesting machine than a 190SL.

If he knows nothing about them I suggest he reads a good book!

Edited to add: Silver arrows are at www.silverarrows.co.uk/

Many thanks andrew - I have recommended that he buys the book and passed on the link - very nice to get a message from someone with such an obvious passion for the classic mercs.

I'm now wondering if I could live with a pagoda and a w124 coupe as a daily hack insead of my Maserati - oh for more parking spaces!!
