Discussion
Long time PH reader and lurker here however this will be my first post on the forum, so apologies if this has been asked before.
Im a 3rd year student studying MEng mechanical engineering at a russell group university, on course for a first. I have been a passionate motorsport fan (always following WRC, WEC and of course F1) for most of my life and have decided it is time to try for a placement in motorsport.
However I have little industry experience; a very short time at Morgan and my work for my Uni's formula student team, as well as relevant courseworks and modules. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of any smaller companies who would be willing to take on an intern or any links in the industry I could send my CV to?
Im a fast learner with a obsession for problem solving and I have strong people skills. Please drop me a pm if you have any advice or information, I would be eternally grateful.

I suggest chin up, best foot forward, stiffen that upper lip and put yourself out there in front of everyone.
Hey, thank you for the response, I cant help but agree with your last line.
However its not a lack of confidence in my abilities, I am more than capable, its the lack of actual real life experience. I should probably have mentioned that I'm also more interested in smaller companies as my work would be more varied and have a larger effect and I feel I'd get more out of the experience.

Better. Now you're starting to sell yourself, show you've thought about it and you've got a career trajectory. Horrific company to work for. Just google it. They need a good problem solver.
Pressurised, focussed yes But not horrific.
But I guess Google is more accurate than real experience
It's not an internship but McLaren are looking for someone within the Motorsport/GT department (seperate to F1).

Ex McLaren here and feel like I should chime in.
As someone else said, intense, stressful, high paced, exciting, challenging but far from horrible. They get their pound of flesh of course but in return you get them on your CV and an accelerated period of experience in your career which for me at least have proven massively valuable.
OP - sorry your thread is being derailed. Try Prodrive, they're always busy and work on some cool stuff. They also house Roborace in Banbury which while a little different may well be an interesting bit of experience in something really pushing the envelope of what motorsport is.
editing to add this job at Prodrive. Says undergrad but worth throwing your name into the hat if a placement is what you're after.

If you're at all interested in the legislative aspect of motorsport i.e. applying engineering principles to ensure the the rules keep things safe-ish, then you may want to try the "Global Institute" - the science and engineering arm of the FIA.
They take on students and give out at least one scholarship for further education / study.
Or what about the MSA? Similar but UK focussed.
I'd give you contacts at the company that I've just come from but they've decided to stop doing actual practical work and concentrate on becoming another consultancy.
And as for McLaren - it's the same as most F1 teams from what I have heard from friends (no direct experience myself) - it is what you make it. You can be incredibly successful very quickly or you can be chewed up and spat out. Probably takes a certain type of personality (no judgement here if that's a "good" one or a "bad" one) but I believe that most know what they're getting into when they join.
And Glassdoor's a load of s
te - their business model involves companies paying them to moderate the poor reviews!

Thanks for the info man. Being an ex McLaren employee, apart from generic stuff do you have any advice for skills to emphasis in my application? I would add, being older and never having worked for a team.
Do it now, as if you don't you will NEVER get in if you have similar experience, they only pick people who have done it before, so weird are the ways they work and get paid.
I have two decades of experience in aerospace, commercial and manufacturing engineering and have never had a look in despite applying for suitable roles that fit my skills
They rarely pick from outside, it's like a club. Just my observations as an outsider.
