£6k for Interesting Executive
Discussion
After six very happy and trouble-free years with my Rover 75 I really want something else but I'm struggling to find something I like! I prefer larger saloons (although it's not the be all and end all) but it's got to be interesting which rules out the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
I quite like Peugeot's 607 but all the ones I've seen have astronomical mileages like old taxis. The Citroen C6 looks absolutely fantastic, but I'm worried about its reliability. (Justifiably so?) The Alfa Romeo 166 is beautiful but I haven't seen any decent ones for sale near me...
I'm not fussed how its powered. Any and all ideas much appreciated!!

Cadillac (I posted a 6k STS, but the ad doesn’t seem to link- has white walls, on AT but seems to have gone).

f:0A Lexus LS460 looks like a lot of car for the money and strong performance without crippling economy. Hardly see any about either.
I always fancied a Honda Legend but the performance figures didn't seem all that great considering the engine and economy. Very good AWD system though.
Agree about the Phaeton! It's probably a car that has more for the money than anything else in existence. I remember watching a YouTube review on it and it's ridiculous how much tech is in it but I'd be so nervous about things going wrong.
Another car that really appeals to me is the BMW 760Li. Again, tons of tech and looks like a really nice ride.
Jaguar XJ or perhaps XF, the latter being a little common though.
Not sure if a SAAB 9-5 new shape would be executive enough, besides parts may be a bit of a bugger to get.

Excellent, love lots of these ideas - especially the Jags, a cursory glance reveals lots of surprisingly modern, aluminium-bodied XJs. The Lexus LS would hopefully be hugely reliable but that big V8 would be a bit too thirsty for my commute. The Phaeton never occurred to me! Definitely interesting; a bit Passat-like on the outside but the interior is fab.
The aforementioned oversized luxo-barges would be far less nimble where I live in the sticks, so I might enjoy an executive-sized car more: the more manageable Jaguar XF appeals and a friend suggested the Mercedes CLS, which I like.
I'm seeing a Citroen C6 Exclusive on Friday. I believe it's the same diesel engine as used in Jags so it should be good.

Peugeot Citroen build very reliable diesel engines, as long as the maintenance is preventative and not reactive.Edited by Neroli on Wednesday 7th November 14:19
I'd go C6 on your buying criteria.

I average 27/28 mpg on my 90 mile return commute mostly on dual carriageways. Very good for a 4.6 petrol V8 but obviously not as good as say a 3.0 diesel.
That's better than I expected, actually. I'm leaning towards a six-cylinder diesel, though a petrol turbo-4 (like SAAB's GM Ecotec) would suffice.Tyre Smoke said:

This has a 'lounge pack' whatever that is. Perhaps a wood burning stove and a coffee table?
Just noticed the 230g/km emissions and apparently £540 a year road tax though

£6000 is exactly what I paid in a private sale for a 2007, 150K miles Lexus LS460 early last year. Loaded with all the toys and now on 180K miles and still looks, drives as good as new.
Jag XJ worth a look as well.
Blimey. I've had a look at these previously and very much like the look of them - didn't know they'd got quite that cheap though. If you're looking for a barge and can find a half-decent one of these for six grand then you'd have to be a lunatic to consider anything else IMO. Jag XJ worth a look as well.

Something does ring a bell about despite being an aluminium body they used steel rivets which would of course react. Not sure when and what models though.Gassing Station | Car Buying | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
