I was in a bird hide in Bookham Common this morning when a Hercules flew over at I guess about 300 feet. Can’t think why it would be so low.

They are learning how to catch every piece of lmg/hmg and small arms fire that can be sent their way by not very nice people in very far away places...

i remember in GW1 the initial RAF low level raids being abandoned due to losses in favour of going in a few thousand feet higher where it was a lot safer.

low flying no doubt has its place but altitude is a pilot's friend

If your enemy has effective radar and fighters, altitude may not be safe either!

Once saw a C130 doing its thing along the Somerset coast, went so low into a valley that I looked for smoke from the crash.

I must admit I did wait a short while expecting that to happen as well. I have a sneaky feeling they know more about what they’re doing than I do. laugh

Ignorance is no excuse.

Pretty sure I saw one of these flying low over north Dorset a couple of months back. Only caught a glimpse of it through the trees as I was driving home, but had me wondering what it was doing there. Not too far away from Boscome Down so I guess could be related?

There's been 2 flying over north Norfolk most nights for the last few weeks.
Usually Usaf but sometimes Raf.
One has no nav lights the flight radar sites show them very close together.
They have been doing some air drops at Raf Sculthorpe as well.

Several years ago one of these did the same at Powick between Worcester and Malvern being buzzed by two Apaches helicopters. I lost sight of all three and went left towards Malvern then rounded the corner to be confronted by the two helicopters noses down and hovering facing into the oncoming traffic. Very impressive and quite a surreal sight whilst going about my business.

I remember about 20 years ago seeing a USAF one flying just above Thirlmere as we drove along the road beside the lake. I think it was a MC-130. It was going very slowly as well.

Going low in a Herc (ok it was a civilian version) in Afghanistan is not advisable as we picked up 7 AK47 rounds in the wing and fuselage......it would of been ok if it wasnt for the 20,000ltr fuel tank we were carrying in the hold as well!

maybe having a load of fire suppressant foam in the fuel tanks would have helped, just saying...

Interesting conflict there as Drones are allowed to fly to 400ft.....
