I have recently bought a 2012 Audi A5 S Line 3.0 TDI Quattro Sportback, but the first thing I've noticed is that the headlights are not very bright, but in order to replace them I need to know what type of headlight it fitted, how can I find out if they are Halogen or Xenon

If it helps the lights dance about when switched on, think this is the self leveler

As far as I am aware, only xenon and LED headlights (factory) self level on start up.

You should be able to tell from the back of the unit - cars I have had with Xenon usually have warning stickers re high voltage at the back of the headlight and wont be the standard connector to the bulb. Most xenon are also housed in projector type units rather than reflector units.

If xenon, and sounds like they are and if the original ones, their light output over the years can decrease so maybe a new set are called for?

I hope I am not wrong in making an assumption that you not particularly familiar with cars etc - if so, maybe worth just popping into Halfords and asking them to have a look. They sell the Xenon bulbs and will fit them (unless a real pain to install) but if so, they at least will have a book to tell you what bulbs they are.

Xenons are not hard to change as such but as they are expected to last a long time, they are sometimes harder to get to.
