Sometimes when cold, the car idles at very low revs, and wants to stall.

Today, I was reversing into a parking space and it stalled on me (this after 30 minutes of running). It refused to restart (turning but didn't fire), so I pushed it into the space, removed the filler cap from the tank, put it back on, and hey presto it started again. I did this because I heard a pop from the back when I started it at the start of this run, although I thought it might have been someone else closing their boot. Fuel pump primes ok as well.

The stepper motor has been cleaned a few hundred miles ago, and its always been run on 97/98.

Any clues?

Did you get a rush of air when you removed the cap

nah, I thought it might but nothing. Its the leven fuel cap.
