Hello all,

So all new to this I’m looking at getting a bmw 118d m sport.

My only concern on the car is it has 93k miles on a 2014 plate. Should I be worried about that at all? Service history shows that the cars been serviced every 20k miles and water pump and cam belt was done 10k miles.

Anything I should look out for or ask?

Many thanks!

I’d check that history - they don’t have cam belts, and the cam chains are fitted at rear of engine so doubt it’s been replaced

It’s an N47 so may well have had a new cam chain.

How long do you plan to keep the car and how many do you do a year? That said 93k seems like a lot over 4 years...

I know that’s what I was thinking that’s like 20k miles a year.

I’d say at least 3/4 years and I do around 9/10k miles a year

In my opinion, providing the price of the cars not too much, and you're okay with the fact it will depreciate a fair amount. Taking a diesel to 150k shouldn't be a problem at all.

There's a chance around that mileage that the turbo may go. Some do, some don't, it's just a chance.

As with most cars on 93k, the dampers will be fairly worn, given a bouncy ride and slightly wayward handling on a bumpy road. It tends to be more noticeable on a BMW because they're very well balanced to start with (esp M Sport).

If you like handling, budget for the dampers without a doubt. Also accept the chance the turbo may go. As for the rest, you should be fine - I took my last E90 to over 150k and my current one is on 111k.

One thing I would say, and this goes for any secondhand car, is have a look around the car for signs of wear and tear. I've owned lots of BMWs, and the worst one for reliability was a 69k miler that had done short trips all its life. Some of the best cars I've owned for reliability have just done a steady 70 on the motorway for most of their life. Obvious really when you think about it.
