SMG keeps going into neutral

Persistent problem with my E46 M3 which goes along these lines.

Orange gearbox warning light on dash.
Engine management light a few miles later
Then the gearbox will keep going into neutral - wiggling why stick between neutral and 'drive' sometimes drops it back into gear sometimes not. Having zero power when you are in lane 3 of a busy motorway is a sphincter tightening experience I can assure you.

It seemed to do it when the ambient temperature was high so it was doing it a lot over the summer which was a massive PITA.

At the last service i have the clutch slave cylinder replaced along with the clutch position sensor - great for about 500 miles but now doing it again in much lower temperatures (this is a new development)

Any ideas what it is? New clutch required? Car has done 110k and i can't find any evidence of it having had a new clutch at any point in its history (I've had the car 3 years)

Call Richard Barker at Barkers Motor Works in Haslemere OR look up Andy Walker at Walkers autotech 01403 751646

Both were top BMW techs of that era of car.

Have you changed the salmon coloured relay?

No but googling 'SMG Salmon Coloured Relay' suggests that I probably should.
