Hi,

I am in the market for a new motor and really fancy a Scirocco or fiesta ST. I have seen a 2010 scirocco(2.0 tsi 210 hip) for £8.5k. 56k miles which was really nice.
I have seen a few things on a few forums regarding VAG timing chain issues, particularly the tensioner. The one I have seen has had a new timing chain installed. Is there anything to look out for with regards to that, ie noises, rattles etc.
Does anyone know if there is a certain year/engine where the chain has been a particular issue due to design fault. And further to that if the chain has been recently changed could I assume the tensioner etc has all been changed and adjusted accordingly and will therefore last a decent amount of time.

Finally, if anyone with any knowledge of the cars above mentioned would have the choice between a scirocco and fiesta ST what would be the better choice.
Both models are similarly quick, I haven’t heard a bad word said against ST’s but love the understated look of the scirocco.

Any advice appreciated
Thanks

I think its a rattle on startup which means its on its way out.

The updates tensioner from factory dates are in here https://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47...

Both nice cars but I'd have the Scirocco over the ST.

I've owned both

I had a viper green 2010 Scirocco 210 tsi dsg for 5+ years till 2016 and then a Fiesta st3 for 1 year till 2017

The timing chain tensioner failed on my scirocco which caused enough damage to require a new engine, fortunately VW agreed to cover most of the cost despite the warranty having expired.

The tell tale sign was indeed a rattle on start up which is easily heard but due to my ignorance I took no notice of it and paid the price.
If the car your looking at has had the chain and tensioner replaced with the later version then it should no longer be an issue.

The fiesta st3 was ordered to replace the Scirocco because my daughter was looking to start taking driving lessons, so I wanted something small and easy to drive with a manual gearbox that she could get some extra practice in, but also be fun for me to drive.

Compared to the scirocco,
On the plus side,
the steering is more direct and go cart like and you can really chuck it into corners which is good fun + I was averaging nearly 40 mpg compared to high 20's in the scirocco,
it was well equipped (mine had every option fitted) the keyless entry and start button worked well and the boot space was pretty good for a small car and slightly better than the Scirocco even with the spare wheel optioned.

On the minus side,
The ride was very stiff and unforgiving ( my Scirocco was on 19" wheels but felt like a limo in comparison),
the interior felt cheap and a bit of a downgrade, I found the shoulder bolsters on the recaro seats restricted my movement and would cause me to ache on long journeys,
it never felt that quick, especially on short journeys due to the engine not seeming to give full power till it was properly warmed up, and the bodywork seemed a bit flimsy and not that well put together

I decided after a year I'd had enough and got rid,
on the right day and the right roads it was great fun to drive and would keep me entertained the whole journey, the rest of the time I found it uncomfortable and not that nice a place to be.

My Scirocco is one of the few cars I've regretted selling,

the fiesta is better handling and more fun when tackling a series of bends or trying to go sideways round a roundabout, but for the rest of the time I'd prefer the Scirocco.

Hth
Any more questions just let me know

Thanks for the advice guys. What is the best way to find out whether the new chain and tensioner are the new updated ones. Would the service history show this or would I need to email VW with the reg to see if it is. Common sense would suggest it would be the new one but you never know with these things

There is no way of knowing unless the person who got it fitted has an invoice with the specific part number on it.

Also from what I've read VW never did a recall or made people aware of the issue.

Just to give my input i owned a Scirocco for 7 Years and Loved it - although it did break my heart.

I also had a few expensive things go wrong , including a New Engine Because of the timing chain issue.

I also went through 2 Intake Manifolds which were about €800 fix each time.

Still miss it though smile Remap and Milltek made it a million times better

It seems the tensioner issue is very widespread. Alot of people who just go out and buy a car without knowing much are getting screwed because alot of these engines are still out there ready to go bang!

Yep
VW won't even acknowledge there's an issue,

This is a better thread

So, budget £300 for the updated part or lots more for new chain and all the bits
