Hi all,

This may be a lengthy one, sorry!

I currently own a 2014 Z4 28i which I’ve had for just over 2 years. I’ve spent fortunes on it and still like it but for the last 18 months I’ve been doing around 18k miles per year for work (wasn’t planned when I bought it!).

Therefore having bought an averaged mileage 2 year old car it’s now done 85k miles.

I’m currently getting 27mpg from the 2.0 Turbo, it’s been remapped but that’s not had any effect on fuel consumption. Personally this seems terrible considering it’s supposed to be a modern turbo engine that should be economic!

I originally wanted to go from the Z4 in to an M4 once there’s good examples around the £35k mark however, my work mileage isn’t going to change and I’m hardly using my car for any sort of “fun driving” anymore. I can not justify the amount of money I’d be losing on an M4 with the mileage I’m doing especially as it’s mainly done between J7 and J31 on the M25 say at 70mph if you’re lucky!

So I’ve started to look at the regular 4 series and with the M Performance kit they still look great in my opinion! And around half the initial price of the M4 which makes the high depreciation I’d suffer more palatable!

Question is, would going to a diesel be a huge mistake given what the government want to do with diesel cars within the next 10 years or so?

What is the real world mpg of the 35d?

Is there a big difference between the 35d and the 30d in terms of performance and economy?

I’d really like to hear your thoughts on this as I don’t want to make a catastrophic mistake going for a diesel but with the mileage I’m doing it seems like a better idea to me!

Noone knows whats goong to haopen with diesel of course. It could all die down, you could be lynched and marched out of town..

I've got a 4 series and its great. I love it. Can you buy it and love it, just like those who ignored the porsche engine problems and enjoyed the car for what it is??

Out of interest why has the Z4 cost you a fortune? Repairs or modifications?

I’ve been contemplating one as a third car, but would be put off if they suffer reliability issues.

Apart from cracked wheels and a cracked turbo pipe purely improvements / mods... not bad for a car that’s been driven relatively hard at times and has been mapped for the last 40k Miles. It’s always serviced by BMW when it’s required and it’s been remarkably reliable.

I’ve added the following

Remap, 4 pots, suspension, wheels, loads of bits colour coded / wrapped, carbon fibre touches, alcantara steering wheel, speaker upgrades, custom splitter, exhaust plus more! it’ll be a shame to let go of it as it’s a great spec in a rare colour combo with tasteful mods imo but it’s now on 85k miles and I fancy something a bit bigger.

I hope so yes!

If you want a 435d get one. Forget the current anti diesel nonsense. It’ll soon pass. It’ll only cause you problems if you regularly drive into a major city. Or if you make car choices based on others opinions.

Re reliability the latest BMW 3.0d is the B57, which is based on the N57. The N57 was fairly reliable but had the odd issue. Time will tell if the B57 is reliable.

Re poor Z4 mpg, it is a 2.0 petrol turbo-so it’s not doing too bad.

They are very reliable and relatively cheap to run. I think the OP has spent his fortune on bling/aftermarket add-ons.

If it's a scratch you need to itch then do it for me. I had the same engine in a 640d and it offered a great performance/economy mix. It returned 40mpg over 70k miles overall.

It's the best diesel engine I've experienced.

I have a 430d and I haven’t driven a 35d variant so I can’t tell you the difference, but what I can tell you is that the 30d is more than quick enough, the surge of torque is amazing and it sounds alright for a diesel, you hear the turbo spool, really loud, it’s quite satisfying.

I had a play with a 335d xdrive estate on a slip road and there was no gap, literally must have been 40 to 70 cough 120 cough and there was no difference.

I think the biggest difference would be that the 35ds have zero lag from what I’ve heard but I never have problems with the turbo lag in my car as a simple push of the sport button eliminates it. It tightens the throttle and keeps you in gear at all times where all the torque is on offer.

Before I bought mine 2 years ago, I had a choice between a basic 435d x drive with only the 19 inch alloys and a fully specced 430d. I picked the 430d and haven’t regretted it.

The 35d carries a significant premium over the 30d, I still monitor prices and with the miles you’ll be doing, you should make sure you get one with the M sport plus pack, that has the Brembo brakes, tinted windows, HK and the 2 tone wheels. The HK is fantastic and the most important thing to me.

Good luck!

I’m sure the 30d will be plenty, I’ll keep my options open.

HK is a must, 4 pot brakes are a must (have them on my Z4!). I’d like one with the M performance wheels and preferably the splitter and side skirts.

Being fussy I’d like a grey one with cinnamon leather but I can’t see that happening!

I recall having some fun with a 335d touring in the 640d from 60 to about 110, and I couldn't keep up with it(much to my surprise in fairness). So the lighter weight of the 430d will play its part for sure.

The biggest difference for me between the 30d and 35d is that the 35d pulls hard at low revs...but still feels punchy at higher revs too(plus a little less laggy).
