Hi,

Looking to change cars in a few months time, looking at the Mk7 GTI with DSG, I think I had read somewhere that the DSG gearbox was changed when it went from MK7 to 7.5, is this right? If so is the newer DSG unit much better than the older one?

Thanks in advance

On the 7.5, the 230 retains the old dry 6sp box, the 245 performance gets the significantly better wet 7sp box.

The old 6-speed is wet clutch. The old 7-speed is dry-clutch.

For clarity, the old 6 speed was wet clutch. The new 7 speed is also wet clutch.

There was (and still is) a dry clutch 7 speeder but never for the Golf GTi (used in low power cars).

The 7 speed GTI has similar ratios to the 6 speeder but with an additional (lower revving) top gear.

Supposedly more refined than the 6 speeder as well and I have heard (some conflicting) reports that it had a 80k mileage between services. PLEASE CHECK THAT AS IM NOT 100%. The 6 speeder needs servicing every 40k.

Good luck.

Apologies OP, my mistake, both boxes fitted in the 7.5 GTi are wet, the 245 performance does however have the 7sp.

Thanks for the replies, just what I was after! Does anyone know when the "face lift" model came in?

Officially it was March 2017 on the 17 plate, but cars didn't start arriving until April 2017.

You'll also find lots of old pre-facelift cars registered on 17 plates. The Facelift is easily identifiable though due to it's headlights and full digital dash etc.

The facelifted 310PS S3s (getting yet another 7 speed box) have a 75k mile gear oil interval so that rings true.

Yep they're visibily very easy to tell apart!

The 7-speed 'box is a vast improvement on it's elderly predecessor. It's so smooth that I was convinced it was a ZF8 the first time I drove one!
