Some advice please. We have recently found out that some relatives are struggling a little with money. They are in their 80’s and basically their outgoings have just been slightly more than their income for a while and they are starting to feel the pinch. We want to help out but they are fiercely independent and would never accept any direct help...any ideas how we could just give them a small amount of financial support which doesn’t come across as charity? Any advice would be welcome

Would they be receptive to you sitting down with them to see if there are any ways they could reduce their outgoings?

It's quite possible that they haven't got the best utilities deal for example, car insurance, house insurance if applicable etc, all the things that you can get better deals with by going on-line.

Do they shop around for their household spend, or do they have to shop at one of the more expensive supermarkets because they aren't mobile enough to travel to far?

Just writing down their monthly outgoings could easily identify areas where they could save.

Thanks, this is great advice...problem is they are relatives on my wife’s side and I dont think they would open enough to enable this to work...its got to be more of gift, but not a gift if you know what I mean...

Does that include various benefits? https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/money-...

Are you sure they're hard up? We've been involved in looking after several old people and while they weren't rolling in it they all had comfortably more income than outgoings.
