Morning all,

I found this lamp at my grandfather's house and decided that it would be good to restore it (whist keeping the patina).
Does anyone know what it is? Like what train or company would have used it?
Lamp:

P.s. I'm on my phone and the photos will be on thir side. Not sure of the remedy

I'm not an expert, but the bracket on the back could be to put the lamp on the "Lamp irons" on locomotives and brake vans. There should be an oil container with a wick burner inside to provide the illumination - I'm sure they can still be obtained.

Not a guards van lamp .There would be two brackets for a sidelight. And a red lens for a tail light. Looks to have been badly painted a funny colour. Any indication of the original ?

Apparently white. A colleague knows a couple of train people and they said a rear lamp.
Unsure of age though

I'd say a locomotive headlamp. A tail lamp would have a red lens.

It's definately a steam loco headlight of LMS/BR vintage, looks like traces of black paint beneath the non original orange, BR pretty much adopted this style for it's standard loco head lights. Black was the colour used by the LMS with BR changing to white in the mid 50's, loco's would have carried several as the positioning of the 4 lamp brackets on the front indicated what type of train was approaching. Firemen would then place one or two lamps on the front(rear if running bunker/tender first)lamp irons
