Weird diesel issue on Honda FR-V 2.2 iCTDI
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm quite new here and now wondering why I haven't joined before, this place is massive.
Anyway, onto my problem which I hope someone can help me with...
I have an 05 Honda FR-V 2.2 iCTDI with 200k on the clock, it goes well and is in good shape for it's mileage and of course I did anticipate some problems for it when I bought it. So a few months ago I had a blow by on injector number 2, I had a diesel guy replace the copper gasket and then it was all good. Fast forward to today, and something new maybe similar is happening but it's worse. This time it's doing that leaky ticking sound but from injector 1 this time, but it's not leaking fumes to the engine bay like last time, (I know it's number 1 because I disconnected the signal to it and the ticking stops), but it still smokes REAL bad (white and blue, it's not a blown engine or gasket or valve seals, it happens when you give it load). When warmed up or running under load (i.e driving round the block, not even giving it any real whelly), it knocks as well, I am not sure if this is dieseling or something more mechanical. All these symptoms come up when it's not cold. The engine light is not on and there are no codes coming up on a simple OBD2 scan. I contacted the diesel guy and he suggested we let him take the injectors out and he sends them away for testing, and possibly cleaning or replacing them, which would be about £800.
I can't help but wonder if it's something else, I agree it's done a lot of mileage, but before all this happened one morning, the engine pulls hard (still does with bad smoke) and burns cleanly while giving excellent mpg, so I'm not convinced it's injector issues. I'm not even sure if it's a sensor otherwise I'd get a code in on OBD2 reader. I think what ever is causing it is making it overfuel in general and the ticking on injector 1 is just a weakness (as happened on injector 2) thats shown up because of this new fault. It has passed the MOT recently and I know they do a hard acceleration to do the smoke test, I just wonder if that caused something to happen.
I've checked the air filter, and naturally it's a bit dirty, but not so dirty as to cause this kind of thing to happen overnight.
If anyone has any ideas on where to start it would be much appreciated? Thanks

I will be the first to admit I am no diesel expert but right up until you said you had been recommended to get the injectors tested & refurbished I was saying injectors.
It is an easy one to knock off the list & at that mileage a likely candidate, try someone a bit more local that doesn't need to send them away though, lots do it if you get on with a bit of googling.
Perhaps tell us where you are & someone may know someone reputable near you.

Thanks for reply. I'm in Liverpool. The guy I used to get the seal for injector 2 is called 'stoneycroft diesel', can't fault him tbh. But I want to explore other things before I blow money and hassle on getting all the injectors done.
Just to be clear, it smokes even with injector 1 disconnected. Surely all 4 injectors can't be all overfuelling when the day before it was driving perfect. I just think some pipe has popped off somewhere or some return line is blocked up, and I'm no expert in the black magic of diesels either.
I can't drive the car to anywhere it's that bad, it would need recovering to somewhere.

I've had lots of cars, only car i've ever had injector problems with was my 2006 civic diesel, same engine as yours.
I was getting the chuffing noise, no smoke though, looked down the injector hole and it was all lovely oily dieselly blackness, new seal and all was good.

It's entirely possible for a knackered injector to leak. White smoke on a diesel that smells of diesel fuel is a classic sign of an injector problem.Gassing Station | Engines & Drivetrain | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
