Newbie Here.

I’ve had a Carrera 997S for the past six months and had a C4S before that. I’ve got bit of a thing about Gallardo’s lately and was wondering if anyone can give me some advice regarding points that are concerning me:-

1. Insurance – I’m 27 with full no claims and previous experience last 6 years driving high performance cars. I live in low risk area and car is garaged. I currently pay around £1200 for the 997S but got a quote from my insurer for a Gallardo and they want £5000! Is this the going rate or can I do better than that?

2. Transmission/Options – should I be looking for an e-gear or a manual? I don’t really like autos so I’m leaning towards a manual car. I’ve heard of clutch problems – does this affect manual and e-gear cars or just e-gear cars? Also is it true that it costs £6000 to replace a clutch and this is covered by warranty even for low mileage cars? What are the options to look for?

3. Price – What should I be looking to pay? What’s the best price for a very lightly used example? Prices seem to vary hugely – Lots of cars just over the £100k mark – what’s the best price for a new one?

4. Depreciation – The thing I’ve liked about the Porsches is that Depreciation has been very low. How will Gallardo prices hold up long term? Can’t see them dropping to 997 money for a few years – so possible depreciation on a car that cost say £100k likely to be around £10k per year?

5. Finance – My 997S has no finance on it so if I used this as deposit what is the best way to finance the outstanding amont?

6. 997 Turbo – worth waiting for?

If anyone has an option price list they could email me this would be most appreciated.

Any Gallardo owners care to comment? Anybody on here gone from 911 to Gallardo?

Many Thanks

The key here is to befriend a broker. Sounds like you swap and change your cars often as do I. Best thing you can do is start using an independant broker who gets to know you better and quote accordingly.

2. Transmission/Options – should I be looking for an e-gear or a manual? I don’t really like autos so I’m leaning towards a manual car. I understand that there have been several software updates to the eGear since launch. Still, there's no way I'd give up my 6 speed alloy manual gate just yet

Can't comment on new discounts, but I know that early RHD versions can be had from mid 90's at dealer prices. Expect cheaper privately.

Expect to be hit in the balls if you trade in with a dealer - many are afraid to take Gallardo's in as stock right now and I've heard dealer bids in the region of 80k for a year old car.

5. Finance – My 997S has no finance on it so if I used this as deposit what is the best way to finance the outstanding amont?

pass.

6. 997 Turbo – worth waiting for?

Er, yes. That is, if Porsche history repeats itself, expect it to be the fastest point to point car ever.

Thanks,

Anybody else got any comments on Gallardo insurance and prices?

Is £5000 realistic insurance or can it be found for much less?

Any comments appreciated.

Wolvy - I've done the move from 996 to Gallardo, you will not regret it. I've actually had a couple of dealers ring me to take it off my hands as the market seems to be more stable either side of £100k so that should reassure you.

£5000 is too much, you should be able to get 25% off that - try Stuart Eden at First Point on an 01604 number (google it).

With regard insurance, First Point were recommended to me by Rocco at Manchester Lambo. Speak to Stuart. 0845 490 00 00. I actually got my Quote from A1 insurance. Limited miles (7k), 6 points and I'm 41. £1600.00. Speak to Johann - She put the cover through Footman James & Company. Might be worth a comparison.

I'm shopping for a Gallardo at the moment. Wanted a manual, one I tested was my preferred colour - black with yellow calipers, but the gearbox was very notchy. Was told this is normal, but another i tried was very slick. Don't be kidded by the dealer.

Go directly to Footman James - found them the cheapest on a number of vehicles (inc. Lambos and Porkers)

Wolvy

I'm 30 live in Dorset and have a clean license.

My premium is approx 3.5k pa

Try ringing round with different companies as 5k sounds high.

I had to declare previous driving experience etc to show i wasnt jumping out of a Ford Escort into a Gallardo.

Good Luck

You may want to see this video, a Murcielago, Gallardo, 996TT X50, 360, NSX "R", and M3CSL, around motegi driven by drivers who, in a control car, were all within a few hundreths of one another, interesting for you to see where the Gallardo finishes relative to the X50, to see that the MURCIELAGO WINS !! YES !!! ,(mind that NSX R can really attack a bend!)...oh and where did the Ferrari finish??????? On a faster track the Lambo's would have won by an even greater margin. :-

Enjoy!

Philo,

To be honest I've had as many issues with Porsches as I have with Lambo's! Porsche GB just seem to be better at smoothing the feathers that's all!

I don't own a Gallardo but would think that they should be fairly reliable, if not, quite, as reliable as the Porsche, which, let's face it, has had many generations of development behind it - whereas the Gallardo is an all new model.

Lambo does offer the peace of mind of a three year warranty as well - so that should be some comfort.

Go for it - you know you want to!....but for the full unadulterated hit, and sense of occasion, you might be better to see if you could stretch a little further to the full Monty.....MURCIELAGO!!

Hi,

Just bought a gallardo at the weekend, what a car!! responses to your questions below:

* Cheapest for me (36 2 prev accidents, 1 sp 30) £2,088 limited to 5,000 through AON )royal & sunalliance) contact wayne 01384 552743

*I went for manual as i dont like the paddle shifts. I've also heard horror stories about clutches and am trying to find out more info from other owners.

3. Price – What should I be looking to pay? What’s the best price for a very lightly used example? Prices seem to vary hugely – Lots of cars just over the £100k mark – what’s the best price for a new one?

* I paid 97k for my 53 reg 2004 manual 2,900 miles from an independant

* I had a modified 993 turbo before (500HP) which seemed faster of the mark but the gallardo from 80 MPH will kill most things dead. I do miss the punch of the turbos but the gallardo is just a sexier car. The only thing that will make me change back to Porsche is the potential big bills with Lambo. I'll keep you posted.

Many Thanks
