Peugeot 3008 GT - the non-PH family car...

Following the arrival of our daughter, a bigger car was needed. Having a three door S3 and a Mini Cooper was becoming tiresome. No one tells you about all of the associated baby paraphernalia required for even the shortest of journeys!
We looked at all of the German stuff but I wasn't a massive fan of the Tiguan, X3, Q3 etc. I really liked the Volvo XC40 but getting hold of one seemed to be a big ask - they were quoting around March 2019 for delivery of car in the spec that we wanted and we just couldn't wait that long.
I really didn't want to like the Peugeot but was impressed when we went to have a look and I've got to say, it's actually a really good car, for our needs.
It's the GT (2.0 TDI, 180bhp, 8 speed auto) model so it's got a great spec - there's not much that it doesn't have. Here's what I can remember... 19 inch wheels, keyless go/entry, electronic boot opening with the 'wave your foot under the bumper' function, heated seats, electronically adjustable and massage driver seat, nappa leather upholstery, radar cruise control, iCockpit (why is everything iblah blah nowadays?!), Focal sound system with subwoofer, panoramic sunroof, sat nav, Apple Carplay/Android Auto, wireless phone charging, self parking, built in air freshener (with three fragrances - wow!), blind spot assistance, lane keep assistance, full LED headlights with auto dimming, etc etc.
We've had it a few months and so far, so good. It's comfortable, rides well, has plenty of room and lots of gadgets. The Focal sound system is great, as is the phone integration, the touch screen and the digital dash. The interior seems to be really well put together, the seats and the quality of the leather is just as good (if not better) than the nappa leather in my S3. The LED headlights are really good - they make night driving much easier. Radar cruise takes some getting used to when you let it slow you to a stop and the auto parking feature is really clever.
It was never going to be a quick car but the engine works well with the gearbox and it handles pretty well - it's actually quite enjoyable through the twisties. Better than I expected anyway.
I don't regret not going German again. It's just got more about it than the German stuff and the interior is a much nicer place.

Is the 8 speed gearbox a ZF? If so, that is a fabulous box.

You could be right, I've got a feeling it's not a ZF box, which is a shame. It’s meant to be a well configured box according to reviews
It's certainly not as sharp as the VAG DSG/S-tronic box but it's more than up to the job is a steadier going 3008

I know what you're saying. There's some decent lease deals about but I saved a fortune though the Peugeot employee discount scheme through a friend of mine. Which certainly helped! Being a German/ Spanish fan myself I found myself swapping the wife's Cupra for a 5008 last year and can honestly say it's been brilliant, very slow as got the 1.6 hdi but lovely to drive, only thing I have found is that I get flashed lots at night as the led lights seem quite bright.

I've heard lots of stories about delays. Ours was ordered through their website for collection at our local dealer on the 1st September. Didn't get it until the 20th with no reason or communication in between. king huge and the A Class just wasn’t cutting it for when we stay away for more than a night. It’s a 1.2 PureTech GT Line 6 speed manual and I think the little engine hustles it along nicely, and sounds good too. It’s the missus’ car really but I’ve driven it a few times and with the tiny steering wheel it’s quite fun and feels quite agile for a big lump.
No radar cruise on the 1.2 which is interesting, can anyone shed any light on this? Standard on all GT line cars except the 1.2, was thinking it was something to do with the 1.2 having less engine braking possibly?

We have one on the pool cars at work and a few staff have taken them as company cars, good looking cars for what they are. I found it to be a really good long distance car and the adaptive cruise is perfect for average speed camera zones, not sure how I lived without it for so long.
One of the 2.0 tdi pool cars is at about 90k now. It's needed a couple wheel bearings and it nags about the tyre pressure sensors not working randomly. That's the sum total of issues on it and it's not very well looked after. It's been a lot more reliable than German pool cars (Passat, A4 or Q5 typically).

One thing that really caught my eye in the current gen Peugeot specs is their quoted weight, a 3008 1.2 (which another user refers to owning) is quoted at just over 1300kg, which is impressively light for such a big car. An XC 40 is over 200 kg heavier!
Probably goes some way to explain why they can be a much better steer than you'd expect

Indeed. If I remember rightly the 3008 is around 100kg heavier than my S3, which is pretty good going! Probably goes some way to explain why they can be a much better steer than you'd expect
