Auction prices

Well, judging by the Silverstone auction results prices are certainly coming down pretty fast. Since I have been in Jaguar world most of my life it is natural for me to look at those first. and a very usable S1 alloy dash E-type made £85,000, or about the same as a barn find wreck was making a year or so back. Nice number plate too - 388 XKE. A one-owner VX220, 8000 miles, unsold and for sale at £16,600 , and a restored Mexico for £38,000 seemed from recollection far less than they were selling for a while back. Loads of unsold cars too, including the low mileage Talbot Sunbeam for which they are now asking £55,000.

I try and follow the auctions at Historics Brooklands when I can and I often think the same, so many seemingly cheap bargains go unsold. Is it because the number of people that are willing to bid at auction houses is declining?

Apologies for the hijack, are there any links? I'd quite like to follow the auctions when they happen/see what went (or didn't) for what.

I love watching the classic auction prices, always think they're a very unscientific way of seeing how the disposable income/feel good factor is in the country as a whole.

I get them all since I am (or was), press but have thrown in the towel for next year. Too old! But look at any of the others like Coys or in particular Bonhams and you'll find the list of cars sold.

There were two Mex's that sold, a Daytona Yellow Mexico for just over £39k and a white Mk2 Mexico for just over £38k.

Both are peak top money in each case, certainly not less than they were selling a while ago. If anything someone paid over market rate for the yellow one, especially as it's got the wrong seats if one was looking at it as a points scoring show car.

I can remember when you could buy a nice one for 15k..........

There used to be a classic car dealer in East London years back called Hills of Leytonstone, they had all sorts of lovely stuff in there and one time they had a red 246 Dino in there for £6995. Would have been 1985.

I went out and bought a new MG Metro for about the same amount. It more or less rusted away in the three years the 18 year old me paid off for it.

Well, yes it is, but remember that the car didn't sell at auction and they are whistling in the wind. I doubt it will sell at that price. Last week I was at one of the big restorers in the UK and they were saying that there a lot of people out there with expensive cars so leveraged that they can't sell since the residual debt would be substantial. I went to see an absolute basket case of a car last week. It was doable and I wanted to have a go at doing it, but the chap wanted £6k on a car worth at best £20k when finished. Another one came on the market at the same time, asking £9k, needed a complete rebuild, to be worth £20k.

To my mind, the value proposition just isn't there with asking prices where they are.

I sold my Vixen recently which somebody said would probably cost £16-18k to finish and probably be worth £20kish tops.

It just takes one person who really wants a project and it can go just like that. I was contacted out of the blue about it, so hopefully he was happy with what he paid for it.

That VX220 (8000 miles) is probably the one that's been on Autotrader for a few month at £20k.

Ludicrous price. Especially as there's a VXR at the same price.

I think £15k is optimistic personally.

Hmm an XK8 for £1400 and an XKR for £8k!

Jay Kay's stuff generally went for good money, and Fords are still strong. There's definitely some softening on what many of us would call 'classics' but in which many younger buyers have little interest (the E-type being an example, IMO)

£5k for a 1982 Maxi (1750 HL no less) - that's where the smart money is.


The prefect colour for the car probably sealed the deal

Always stopped and had a look in Hills showroom, they use to have a lot of MG's back then too.

I wonder if the E-type has been overdone in recent times, there seems to be more about now than when they was new.

Just flats now.

Favourites were obviously the Dino, a gunmetal MKII 3.8, a white Europa and an orange Mk1 RS2000.
