Anyone know what the recall situation is for this. I had mine replaced last year due to water loss 2014 335xd. At the time BMW denied any knowledge of this being a common problem and refused any contribution.
Now it seems they may have been telling porkies looking at the press. When I look on the DVLA website my car does not come up as any sort of recall. Is that because I've already had it done or because BMW weren't telling porkies.

I love your faith. But as I've already paid out for mine I think it unlikely. Can I ask what age and type of car yours was?.

Similar situation BMW were not listing it as a recall until recently so it may not have updated the systems with the right cars under this.

But, and it is a big, but many cars EGR coolers have failed irrespective of being under this recall. Mine is not "under" the recall, even though it falls within the required age range and the EGR cooler was replaced in September as it had failed.

Make of that what you will, if it does subsequently fall within the required vehicles then push BMW over it and get your money back.

I suppose my query is that mine was replaced so I'm wondering if I have fallen off the recall because my car shows as replacement within the last year

I very much doubt BMW is going to do a recall then go back and contact those who have already had it done and reimburse them, so I'm trying to keep an eye out to find if any similar cars were called. Looking on the webist doesn't show the F30 N57 as a required engine, but it is a modular expansion from the B47. Unlikely to be a coincidence. Either that or I just need to suck it up.

Hello Guys

There are a lot of people on the internet who are really confused with the on going situation of the newest BMW Recall (EGR COOLER). I am here to hopefully answer everyones questions on the below.

I have a BMW F30 330D xDrive Saloon. I had purchased not long ago. The guy I bought it off told me the EML use to keep on coming on and off which made me wonder why on earth would i buy it lol. But the car was in amazing spec and for the price i thought why not. My best friend owns a garage and he would sort me out with any problems. My mate advised me the EGR cooler has gone. He advised me its £450 for the original part. I said to him ok lets get this done. Funny story is he ordered the part but it never arrived. Then a miracle happened. I received a letter saying my car is due in for a recall and stated symptoms that should have occurred.

My car started smelling like as if the exhaust was inside the car. The fumes was unbearable. This would only happen when the engine is on and in idle. This was through the heaters. I had to turn off the heaters in the middle of winter when in trafiic. My second symptom was the car lost power. It wasn't giving me the response and power as when i first bought it. Third symptom was it kept on telling me to top up coolant level. The coolant was topped up to the max a week prior to when the fault had appeared. The last symptom was of course the EML light. This was coming on and off which of course I knew the EGR was linked to this.

BMW have no had my car in for a week and given me a courtesy car and they gave me an update saying my EGR Cooler needs replacing and the part has been ordered. I gave my car in the 14th of December. I called them for an update and they advised me this could be done by early January...

I don't mind as I have a car to take me from a to b and most importantly the work is being completed for free. If the work goes on for to long I will be having a go and them regardless if they have recalled thousands of vehicles. If you're good at demanding you'd be able to get like a service free of charge due as good will.

Hi, in my (BMW only) experience, when the car is flagged up with a recall or QEP then they don’t take into account if the part has been replaced before. In some cases an already replaced part, will be replaced again. I have also heard of people being refunded from customer services if they have paid a BMW repair before the recall was carried out.

I was contacted by my local BMW main dealer, by phone, just before Christmas to arrange for the recall work to be carried out. A service is due too. However, 6 months ago the EGR cooler and manifold were replaced by the same dealer after a "catastrophic failure" (lots of under bonnet smoke etc). Having been required to stump up £400 (after a 'BMW contribution of £1600) for the EGR work last time, I'll be asking for at least my service to be covered FOC this time!

I took our 2016 335d into the dealers due to coolant loss on 27th December. According to them, It’s not part of a recall, but will be covered under warranty.
As per your dealers, I’ve been advised that the part is on back order, but thankfully I’ve ended up with a 320d from Enterprise cars.
If you’ve been told it’s going to be at least a couple of weeks, then I think I’m safe in fillling it with fuel as will be doing a few miles in it.

My 330D Touring F31 went in on Friday. Symtoms were EML on and off and actually, the coolant warning did pop up the day before. Same kind of call with BMW (Cooper Reading) they haven't given me a concrete answer on when it will be done but it does need it. Part is on order...
My car from Enterprise is a Nissan Quashqui which reading some comments on here could actually have been worse although I have still requested an upgrade/auto just in case it's in a while!

Hi All

Just an update for you guys.

I have finally got my car back and I must say it feels brand new. My MPG has gone up from 35 to 41 after one week of driving. The fumes smell has gone from the cabin. The car starts and turns off silently with no rattle. EML light hasn't come up since. Coolant was topped up by BMW. Power has been restored, haven't felt it go that fast in months when i put my foot down. All in all the 3 weeks i waited was well worth the wait.

Okay Update to my own thread for those of you interested.

My car went in yesterday, and was found not to have the problem. I mentioned this was likely because they had already replaced the EGR cooler for similar symptoms in 2017, at which point they are requesting a full refund from BMW for my costs at that point.

I will let you all know, but I think if they do retrospectively refund for any EGR replacements then you couldn't really ask much more of a company that that. Well impressed. (so far)

My 420d was in on Monday - no EGR problem as would be expected having had a replacement in April following a catastrophic failure. The Cooper Reading confirmed BMW will shortly be refunding the contribution I had to make at the time.

WIll still need to bring my car in to be tested as per recall

any advice?

Well I think you're buggered.

The EGR cooler is a 'lifed' part. It is taking hot exhaust gases and cooling them down at which point half the soot deposits out. Therefore it can't last forever.

The EGR cooler recall was based on leaking antifreeze catching fire. If you EGR isn't leaking but just sooting up then that isn't a failure its just the item slowly 'acting as a wear and tear item does.

Cleaning it out is therefore nothing to do with the recall, and isn't a failure unless you want to lump all DPF failures in the same sort of way.?

Just an update BMW now paid in full retrospectively for my EGR cooler.

I wonder how many people out there have had an EGR cooler replaced in the past two years who could now apply to BMW for their money back?

I've a nasty feeling my x3 335D is heading the same way, 26k miles and it popped up a low coolant warning light Friday night. Took approx 700ml to get it back to max level. I've emailed BMW whilst its still under warranty (6 weeks left!).
