My i3 is telling me that it needs a regular service. “Vehicle check” + brake fluid.

The earliest appointment that Vines BMW has is on December 11th. That is more than 3 weeks away!

Is it just me, or is that a ridiculous time to wait for something so straightforward?

Probably due to all those safety recalls they need to get through!
Have you tried booking online through BMW UK?

Yes, you're completely right!

Vines BMW should contact all of those owners who'd booked their cars in for work before you did, and tell them all to re-book for a later date, so that your oh so precious car can be serviced first!

How dare they not put you first, and allow you to jump the queue!

Pretty normal lead times for this time of year. There are only so many technicians and workshop hours you know.

Fair enough. I don’t ever recall having to book that far ahead previously though, and I have owned BMW’s for years. A quick google suggests that recalls may well be the reason.

Booked my car into Sytner online, 48 hrs later, I dropped it in at 6.30 am and had it back by 11.

They’re open 24 hrs doing recalls at the mo, maybe Vines are not ?

I think a lot of BMW dealers are short of Technicians, heard they cant keep hold of them

I do not think this is an issue of technicians (in a general sense) having spoken to the aftersales manager at mine.

Although, granted there is a shortage of tech's in the network (but I think many are in that field at the moment).

My dealer has 12 or 14 techs total cannot remember exact figures, but not that it matters for this. Not bad you are thinking?

The issue is only 4 or 5 of them are trained on i cars and hybrid models. Only trained techs in these models (as you can probably appreciate) can work on them and I suspect many dealers are in a similar scenario regarding having a tech trained and available.

Do not mention battery replacement either as my AM told me that the real source of issues for any work requiring battery disconnection then you are down to 2 of that total with the required training. More worrying is that on the exam for battery disconnection 1 technician managed to effectively turn an i3 models battery into a mobile bomb....

I think I always had to book about that far ahead to get a courtesy car - I could get it in quicker for a waiting appointment for quick jobs like a brake fluid change.

Now I use a BMW Indy I tend to have to wait longer! Still if he's busy he must be doing something right!

There is a problem if you dont know how many miles you are doing weekly maybe 300 maybe a 1000 and you have to keep within a 1000 more or less re warranty.

I've had my gripes with Park Lane in the past but they were able to do a brake fluid change on the M5 the same day I called them, and fix the air con condenser under warranty within a few days too. I think they've been working hard on customer service.

That was the issue I used to have as I had taken the car allowance from work instead of the car so was expected to always be mobile - but I just booked it for when Sytner had a courtesy car so I could use that instead!

I always had to wait a while to get in for a service with the Bmw's I've had. Mercedes have managed to get me in within a week on the two occasions that I've used them though. It seems strange how it differs so much.

I preferred BMW servicing though because its a fair bit cheaper than Merc.

It’s always 2-3 weeks for me but that’s because I require a loan car as when you give your car to BMW, they keep it for at least 2 days every time, I don’t know what they get up to in that work shop but they’re useless! It took a week once to replace a faulty speaker.

If it’s because you require a loan car and you don’t want to wait that long, I think they charge 15 quid for a normal rental car and they can fit you in sooner. They double booked a loan car once and gave me a 1.4 Astra for a day, they paid for it but they said it would have cost 15 pounds.

One of mine is booked in next week, usually they can fit it in with a week or twos notice, this time was more like 4 weeks, I'm assuming they're busy with recalls.

dealers being dealers,

used to be a case of bonuses were plentiful and baseed on getting cars out the door pdq, paid book time for the jobso if say a job was booked for 4 hours and you done it in 3 you banked an extra hour.

dont know how the rest of the world ran their workshops but it used to work fantastically well. especially on things like recalls where techs could make some serious money wading through car after car on a saturday and even occasionally a sunday.

same with walk ins customers would always get put in somewhere and the car would get done one way or another as it was easy money for someone.

unfortunately a thing of the past in a lot of places and why would you bust a gut when theres no major reward for it?

that and a shortage of techs and even on occasion parts in the supply chain means a headache for even simple stuff.

in a utopian dealership experience it would be staffed 24/7 with stock of all parts on site with customers being able to drop their car off after work and collect it on their way in the next morning along with a free coffee to go. you would be able to drop your car in without notice and have it done there and then. not a chance customer service went out the window years ago and its all about making the figures that need to look good look good
