I've been looking around and can't find a decent NEW replacement for the VW GTD. looking for a diesel which does 0 - 60 in less than 8.5 secs, and I can't find any decent ones.

VW, Audi etc all seem to have stopped doing them. I suppose it's due to the EU emissions testing.

Does anyone have any decent ideas. Is it a matter of waiting?

I just got a used Volvo v40 D3 and enjoying it so far, 150hp with 350nm and can get it chipped by polestar to bring to D4 power (something like 177hp and 400nm if I remember correctly)
Might be worth a look, handling isn’t amazing on mine but it’s a nice interior and feels quick enough for me for now, although I am tempted by the polestar chip!

They don’t seem to do the more powerful Diesel engines now, used to get the D4 version but doesn’t seem to show on their website now?

120d should do the trick!

My mum had a 12 plate 120d sport manual and a 15 plate 120d M sport auto.

The sport manual one was actually a much better drive than the M sport despite not looking anywhere near as good. It also felt a lot quicker and was much more fun to drive. The M sport was pretty stiff and the auto box sort of hid the cars performance.

The manual felt a lot quicker because of the gearing so you felt the torque and with it being RWD, it had a lot better traction than a FWD car with the same power. I.e GTD.

Only thing is, they are pretty cramped inside and the manual 120d could get tiring as the clutch is pretty heavy and the gear changes aren’t as smooth.

I actually had a 118d se loan car for a few days and found it a much better drive than both. Some cars aren’t meant to have loads of power to have fun.

BMW 125D? It’s significantly more powerful than the Golf and the auto is a brilliant engine/gearbox combo.

I liked the idea of the BMW but do not like rear wheel drive - too slippy in bad weather. Mind you there's a rumour that BMW will be making the series 1 front wheel drive next year.

What age GTD do you have? If MK6 or earlier than the MK7 Golf MQB platform cars with the 184 TDI engine are great steers, I've had an Octavia vRS for the past couple of years and rate it highly, would really struggle to look past a similar option when I need to replace it.

The 1-series will probably have better traction than the Golf in the wet so less slippy. They are set up to understeer anyway even on a moderate throttle.

The GTD has aa sporty feel but as you're probably aware isn't sporty, but that's not to say you can't have fun with them.

The list below are all sporty, as for RWD honestly it makes no difference they'll both have good traction.

I covered 15k miles in a 125D through a cold and wet Scottish winter and despite not being a driving god I managed to not crash or die in any way.

Admittedly I did put winter tyres on it during winter (August to June up here).

I had this very nightmare recently - nothing is being built. OP states 'New' - good luck finding any of the above.

Is it a company car? Tax bands are a mess at the moment, you can't find many 'sporty' Diesels - the manufacturers are only churning out 1.6's and eco boxes. VW currently quoting 32 weeks delivery on a GTD BlueLine (which is a revised spec with smaller alloys = 118g CO2 figure). I couldn't wait that long, sadly.

The only remotely sporty new diesel I found was a 308 GT HDi180. Auto-only and they seem to have made the pano-roof standard and dropped a lot of the other gadgets to options instead. So compared to the VW you'll miss things like heated seats, digital dash, active cruise.

On the plus they look alright and are a decent steer - I couldn't get a drive in a GT, just a GT-line, but the HDi180 is currently in production for January delivery.

I ended up asking myself how much money I could save by taking a company car and went with a top of the range Hyundai Ioniq instead! I'm going to miss the power, but it has lots of toys.

Don’t think you can put in an order for an FR with a diesel engine, but there are likely lots of pre-registered ones in the dealer network.

A new page has appeared on the VE website. It says

"Can’t find the Golf you’re looking for?
Some of our cars are still being tested under new industry wide standards for fuel consumption and emissions (WLTP type approval). This means you may not be able to find all engines you would expect to see for the Golf.
If you’d like more details on forthcoming models take a look at our pricelist, contact your local retailer or sign up to be notified when more information is available."

Then there's a page which is called "Keep informed" https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new/golf-vii-pa/engin...

That's great but...If you have to order a new car as a company vehicle on a new registration, you can't get hold of any of those cars. Any VAG 2.0 diesel (Skoda, Seat, Audi, VW) is not even being built until March.

Fine if private buyer though I guess.

+ 1 for the BMW 125d.

It will only struggle if we get snow, but I just stick a set of wheels with winter tyres on my BMW for 5/6 months of the year.

I bought a 123d in January 2008 and kept it over 6 years - I've never had any other car that long! 201bhp and 0-62 in 7.0 seconds - quickest 4 cylinder diesel I could find (which is why I bought it).

The 125d is just the next generation version. Or you may be able to get a 120d with X-drive (so 4WD) - still going to be as quick as a GTD Golf.
