I'm subsrcibed to Google One emails and the mail came through for Google drive storage at 200gb and shareable between family members. This strikes me, at £1.59 a month, a total bargain... What's the catch?

Showing as £2.49 for me? Still a bargain though

Sorry, my mistake. I meant 100gb @ £1.59...

Still good value - I wanted to go with Onedrive, but more expensive for less.

I'm not sure if I want/need 200gb though, but at minimal difference, it's almost a no brainer...

Does their Google storage map like drive, IE Dropbox?

I must admit I might sign up and get rid of my DropBox.

The issue I have with Google Drive is how it interacts with Google Photos.

I used to sync all of my photos to Dropbox automatically through the App on my phone but I have now moved away from this and am relying on the Google Photos app to keep my photos as the 25GB that I had on Dropbox isn't really enough space and I had to keep manually moving stuff out of Dropbox into my 100GB Google Drive account. However Google Photos isn't isn't a particularly nice way to manage and edit the photos that I do have, or organise them into folders. I have therefore left a lot of my photos on Google Drive too and I believe this leads to duplication and my storage therefore runs out twice as quick.

If anyone else can provide a neat solution to this that would be great...!

It's for that purpose I want the storage - I have a bazillion photos on my phone that I would like to have backed up somewhere. I had 200gb free with OneDrive that expired after 2 years which was handy, but I now want a replacement.

I'll probably go with 100gb to start with and see where that goes I think. It'd be nice if it'll take folders too, but I fear it wont...

Google Photos is a bit different from Google Drive storage... it does map to a drive, you need the Google Backup and Sync software... you can then make folders on your computer, it then uploads and backups to the cloud ... it still keeps it on your computer though, you will need to go online to the web interface and uncheck the sync if you want to "delete" them from your computer and only have the on the cloud... think of it more as a backup than a storage solution ...

Yes, that is my primary reason for using it. I started with 100GB and am working on the assumption that by the time that fills up 200GB will have come down enough that the monthly cost to me won't change.

In my snip below I think the 13GB is being double counted as in theory I shouldn't have any photos on Google Photos that aren't also on Google Drive. I think therefore I need to properly understand how Google Photos is meant to be used.

I don't use Google Photos at all as I also like managing the folder structure of my photo collection, which currently sits at 240Gb and I use WD My Cloud, which backs up the photos from my phone when ever its connected to Wifi and I also do manual uploads to new folders as and when required. It actually works quite well, but I do only have the single drive WD My Cloud, which does worry me. Might upgrade to the twin drive version, so I have some redundancy.

I've got 4.95 Gb in my drive and 1.41 in my photos - I'll probably keep what's there as there is some stuff in there from my old macbook. I do wonder how long it'll take to upload all my photos though - There are many, many thousands...

Weird thing here is I'm puzzled how people have somehow complicated Google Photos for themselves.

I drop in pictures from my camera I want to keep to Google Photos, and place them in an album there as I do so. Once every six months or so I download ZIP files of my entire Google Photos collection and save it to my NAS, and that backups to an external USB HD connected to it. So I've the original files on Google Photos, and two local copies of the ZIP archives.
My phone automatically syncs anything taken on that to Google Photos, and it's easy to add pics to albums as I go, or create new albums on the fly.
It's really very simple. Granted I've currently unlimited photo storage being an ongoing Nexus/Pixel owner for a number of years, but my camera uploads are currently just shy of 12GB.

Holy thread resurrection, but....

I got an offer from Google for a Home Mini because I've got a Google One subscription - Might be worth checking if you have this yourselves.

I've redeemed it already smile No idea what I'll do with it though as I'm an Amazon "shop"...

Every single photo I take on my Pixel XL 2 and my previous Nexus 6P is backed up to Google Photos, I have also uploaded old photos that have been scanned etc and shared them with family members. I'm just using the free account, I did in the past have extra storage because of buying ChromeOS devices but they have all run out now.
