Gilet, body Warmers call them what you will.
Who wears them?
Who would not be seen dead in one?
Which ones are class?
Which ones are just not the right thing?

Dont care re brand/colour etc as long as the down is decent. I've got a thick expensive(ish) Mountain Hardwear(£100) and a thin cheapo from Uniqlo (£15 IIRC), both are fine .

I've used the cheapo one more as it packs down into a small bag and fits under lots of other coats.

Personally, I don't wear them out of choice. On an occasion a few years ago whilst camping at Santa Pod, it got much colder in the evening than I had accounted for. A mate happened to have a spare bodywarmer in his car which fitted me, and kept me warm. However, photographic evidence then existed that they are particularly unflattering on me, and that I would be better suited to sticking with a proper coat

I've got a few. North Face, Hugo Boss, G-Star, Napapijri etc

Absolutely baffled as to why some people "wouldn't be seen dead in them".

Isn't the primary purpose of a body warmer to allow you to stay reasonably warm whilst showing off sleeve tattoos/random Celtic band tattoos?

hehe

They're quite useful. Sometimes you want your arms free eg playing sports in the cold before you've warmed up.

I've got a lightweight fleece one and a heavier down-and-feather-filled one. I wear the latter over a hoodie when it's chilly but dry.

The former tends to be worn as another layer under a jacket for some additional insulation without additional restriction on the arms.

I have a big Rab one for cold but non-windy days, and a thinner and cheaper Tog24 one which is handy for when it’s a bit too cool for just a t-shirt or to wear over a pullover. It’s good for layering too. I’ve had gilets for years as they add warmth without feeling bulky.

They used to be called Fulham Life Jackets back in the day.

I have one and wear it heavily - sleeves are for softies, also much less freedom of movement to work with sleeves

I have one for shooting, warms the body and provides big pockets for cartridges whilst allowing unrestricted arm movement. Very useful bit of attire.

I wear one walking to the office. It keeps me warm without getting hot and sweaty.

I never considered buying one until I picked up one from a charity shop. It good for wearing in my workshop because, being in my basement, it is chilly and not really worth heating for the few hours spent there. Probably not too useful in the really cold weather unless supplementing another jacket because cold arms seem to make me feel generally cold.

I have two, not for body warming purposes. I discovered them when being a professional photographer. It's wonderful to never lack pocket space.

The summer one is a light, net-backed Rohan one, complete with zipped bunny pocket at the back.

The other is a heavy drill canvas item by 5.11 Tactical. This can stop a lazy wind in its tracks and works well over a sweater. It has a special pocket to take your pistol.

They work for me.

I don't think anyone has said that, have they?

I just choose not to wear one. I have a decent enough coat to keep me warm and I haven't ever felt that it is limiting my arms motion properly.

If I need to layer up, I tend to chuck on an extra t-shirt, usually a Primark £2 special, underneath everything. I could probably get a vest even cheaper but again, something I prefer to avoid.

"Designed to warm the thorax while chilling the wearer’s arms to icy buggery, the gilet remains a firm favourite with men who want to give the impression their arms are too ripped to be contained by an outer layer of sleeve."

Many moons ago I figured I'd never be seen dead in one. Then F-i-L bought one, decided they were a revelation, and bought me a North Face for Christmas one year.

I wouldn't be without it now!

I recall chuckling at a line in - I think - Cloudy with a chance of meatballs where the Dad questions their merits - something like who decides they only need to keep their torso warm - and that has occurred to me on occasion. Usually when I arrive at a windswept coastal location and wonder why I didn't put a proper coat on.
