How much has he paid, and how much do you think you are owed?
It might be a lot easier to just draw a line under it if the amount isn't great. He is never going to be the friend he was, and it sounds like you don't cross paths any more.
Or you could get all nasty and go to court. But surely life is too short for that?

He's paid me just under £2000 this year and I'm owed another £1000. Not a huge amount - but quite a lot of time in man hours. We do cross paths when he's back in the UK, but he's been avoiding me when he's been back recently - he would usually come around to my house. He's spun so many lies now I don't think he can show his face.It might be a lot easier to just draw a line under it if the amount isn't great. I wouldn't take it to court, not worth it.
You might see him as a 'friend', but I'm wondering if he sees you the same way. Surely, if he truly regarded you as a friend, he would either 'fess up that he's struggling to pay you, or he would actually pay you.
That said, unless you're really stuck for a grand, I'd walk away and chalk it down to experience. You never know, he might just come up with the cash one day, which will then be a bonus (as long as its not accompanied by a request for more work...)

Yes. Spot on. I knew he had a history of not paying people, but I was probably a bit naive thinking he wouldn't do it to me as we've been 'friends' since secondary school. I did give him plenty of opportunity to say if he was struggling to pay me. I think it could be more greed than anything, because he flies to and from the UK quite a bit and he's just got back from a lads weekend. Either that or he's in debt and still trying to finance a certain lifestyle. That said, unless you're really stuck for a grand, I'd walk away and chalk it down to experience. Either way - that £1000 covers a lot or orders - he couldn't have got that wrong by mistake. So I'd say it's cynical and calculated on his part.

Since time immemorial there have been 'cads and bounders'.
There seems to be a certain type of person that has a sixth sense that they know they can get away without paying for something and it will never bee chased up. Donald Campbell, Lord 'Lucky' Lucan are two that spring to mind. Live on other people's generosity and never ending credit.
OP, seems like you 'mate' is one of those 'I seem to have left my wallet in the Jaaaag' people.
