New drive shafts

As you're talking about making, I assume you mean the drive shafts rather than the CV joints. Are you looking for standard parts? I thought they were Ford off-the-shelf parts - probably Granada. Should be easy enough to confirm the dimensions. I think the standard parts would be 25 spline with an OD of 1 1/16" and a length of about 18", but measure yours to make sure because it's been a while since mine was standard.

Think Sierra has a long one and a short 'un? S uses a matched pair (long?)

Puzzled by this..

As the propshaft sits on the centreline of the car then the crown wheel of the Diff has to be off centre, so shafts will be different lengths?

Or am I being thick again?

The crown wheel is not on the centerline of the diff.

If this is a Sierra diff, and the propshaft is at the centre of the car, then surely the two shafts need to be different lengths?

I've never paid any attention to it, but I wouldn't assume that the prop shaft is centered in the car. Or the diff, come to that. I also wouldn't assume that the installed length of the drive shafts are the same from side to side even though their nominal lengths are the same - they have a lot of dive on them.

The propshaft flange is around 3/4 - 7/8" off centre. The propshaft willl quite happily tolerate this misalignment and I suspect it is not enough to really notice while doing whatever underneath there unless you specifically set out to measure it?

Ah - That explains it - I could never figure why a Sierra had different lengths and our beloved S didn't, but that would explain it. Sleep easy Barry.
