Hi all

I have an ongoing issue with my car (diesel) overheating once I have driven it for around 45 mins or driven a bit harder (eg hills)

It has had a new radiator and expansion tank recently.

Another garage has done a pressure test and combustion test with no issues seen...

I haven't spoken to them (they sent a video) yet but I think this may have been done without getting to the operating temp/revved to replicate the overheating issue.

Any ideas anyone? Thermostat is apparently working ok and water pump circulating coolant.

Is there a chance that the water pump is not working as efficiently at the time the engine needs it to? If so how can this be diagnosed.

Many thanks

What does ‘overheating’ mean and how have the thermostat and water pump been checked? Both are definitely suspects

Water pump - jut said that it is circulating (visual check)

Again, what are the symptoms of the overheating?

Car runs fine when doing short distances or up to around 45 mins driving. It seems to be once the engine is properly warmed up / driven harder eg uphill that it goes quickly to in the red

no external leaks and as I say pressure and combustion test done today with no issues

thanks

Don't rely on the gauge. You need to measure the actual coolant temperatures in the top hose (out of the engine) and bottom hose (out of the rad).

I don't see why a car would take 45 minutes to get hot even in this weather. It should be as hot as it's going to get after 10 minutes.

Why was the rad and expansion tank replaced. Was it overheating before or just since? Airlocked due coolant drained?

Has anyone actually checked to see if the radiator ran kicks in at all?

Does the car in question use a water pump which has a plastic impeller?

Ok, so once the (don’t rely on one) gauge goes into the red, if you then drive on a level stretch of road at 50mph, top gear, does the gauge needle drop to Normal?
