second gear selection

My 99 chim has 19000 miles on it. The gear selection has always seemed a bit notchy since purchase 6 months ago but OK when warmed up.
On my way to work this morning I changed (At low speed)from third to second and the gears graunched.
From then on I've found it nearly impossible to select second when coming down from third unless moving slowly. First to second and then second up to third is fin, all the other gears are fine. Clutch seems fine. Have I damaged the synchro ring? or is there an easy fix?
Does the engine have to come out to get at the box?
Has anyone out there had the same problem.
