A naïve question- Whats the story for you - why choose one over the other?

As a beginner - they both look similar and with lovely movements

Ive read the web sites about themselves and again sound similar. I love the Rolex explorer but then again love the Tudor black bay Bronze

I have an explorer 214270 and a north flag. Both very nice; I wear the North Flag most days as it has the date, but prefer the feel of the Explorer. The NF feels a little chunky and utilitarian, whereas the Explorer is subtle and (relatively) elegant.

At the moment, availability is certainly one reason why you may choose a Tudor over a s/s Rolex sports watch, given the issues around actually trying to get hold of any s/s sports watches from a Rolex AD.

An Explorer is probably the easiest one to get hold of, even Explorer 2's are now not easy to find, where once you'd see Exp 2's in the windows of every AD!!

The Explorer is a lot smaller than a Tudor BB Bronze though.........closer to a Rolex Explorer 2 in size.
Closest Tudor to a Explorer is probably the new Tudor BB Fifty Eight, although they seem to be made of unobtainium as well as far as UK Tudor dealers are concerned..?

Price point, aesthetics, brand cache and perceived quality all come in to it, potential depreciation may also be a factor. Tudor are still a relatively (re-launched) new brand at the price point they occupy so their sales and general brand awareness may still have room to grow however considering the retail price differential I'd imagine that Tudor would be the more accessible brand.

I own a Tudor BB36, a watch that I purchased new as a treat to myself after a small inheritance. If a pre-owned Explorer 1 was available at the same price(!) I would still have chosen the BB simply because I prefer the look of the watch and the quality of the bracelet. There would be many people out there that could easily afford a Rolex yet prefer the under-the-radar(ish) Tudor brand ,prefer how they look or just don't want to be associated with Rolex. Others may look down on Tudor thinking they're just cheap knock-offs of the "real deal". There will be many out there that own both.

Price point would be a major deciding factor, after that it's mostly subjective IMO.

I've got both, Buying a Rolex new is a different experience to buying a Tudor new. They are also different brands in terms of public appreciation.

You can wear a Tudor all day and people will say nice watch, wear a Rolex and people will say, is that a Rolex?

Tudor goes under the radar for most people, which is why I like wearing my Tudor GMT.

Rolex (new ones) have a 5 year warranty, and only need service every 10 years, this is not the same for a Tudor which only has a 2 year warranty.

Also factor, if you worry about how well these watches hold value, Tudor lose money in the same way Omega and other brands do, of course due to supply issues Rolex do not suffer this (at least for the hard to find models like steel sports)

The Tudor GMT Pepsi has recently has some quality issues (with the date slipping) but is £2800 rather than £6850 for a GMT master.

Having been lucky enough to obtain a brand new GMT blue black i have to say that quality has more than met my expectations, its stunning and well made, fit and finish is 2nd to none, way better than i was expecting.

I was offered a Tudor Steel and Gold black bay, and glad i declined, at £3580 its more than 50% the value of the Rolex i was patiently waiting for and glad i waited and put my money into the Rolex, no regrets at all.

Nothing wrong with Tudor watches, lovely especially at the price they are but not really directly comparable to Rolex in my opinion, so interesting topic, i guess because they are a Rolex owned brand many wonder if its really worth all the hype, well i can say it really is.

Different priced brands totally, most (not all!!) would buy the Rolexif the money was available. Having owned both, the Rolex quality is in a different league to Tudor and they are very much the poor relation despite making very nice watches.

What's the big difference between buying a new Tudor and a new Rolex? I've recently purchased a new Tudor Heritage Black Bay S&G. The girl in the shop seemed surprised that I walked in wearing a Sub LV, but she treated me and the wife very politely, we drank a cup of coffee while bracelet adjustments were carried out etc. What, pray tell, have I missed by purchasing a Tudor?

I’ve been wearing my non date sub for the best part of 18 years , and it’s only been commented on twice.

Most of the general public either haven’t got a clue about watches or couldn’t care less.

Suppose it depends on the AD, my recent experience was sit down, size it and off you go. No coffee etc.

Mind you I got the coffee when I bought my Omega earlier in the year.

I’d choose a Tudor because it’s not a Rolex.

Tudor weren’t on my radar until I saw the Pelegos.

We were offered a glass of wine - each! - but neither of us are wine drinkers so coffee was great. I genuinely wouldn't have wanted to have been treated any differently if we were buying any other watch in the same shop - and there were several 'top-end' brands stocked.

Think it all depends on the AD, I've been into some smaller independent ones in past where you get a more personal service, my Tudor came from a large group AD.

From my Rolex AD we got glass of champagne each.

That said got the same when they sold me My Omega so its not just if your buying a Rolex, at the end of the day these are all extravagant purchases that are not needed by the consumer, and so i would expect these places to acknowledge that whatever the top end brand of watch or Jewellery piece your buying.

But pretty sure its all factored into their bottom line ££!!

Interesting review HERE comparing a non-date Sub and ETA Black Bay Black.

I tried on a Rolex Sub and a Tudor Pelagos back to back in the same jewelers. My preference as a watch in every way was the Tudor. Obviously the titanium case and strap gave it a different feel, but things like attention to detail on Tudor particularly the clasp which was better finished and more elegant in design than the Rolex led me down that path.

As an item of jewellery the Rolex wins because its shiny and its a Rolex which may be better as an investment.

After I chose the Tudor, I read a review (can't recall where) that concluded that the Tudor in house movement is more advanced and at least as well made as the Rolex movement. Obviously I dont know if that is correct because a. I am not about to take the back off my watch and b. I wouldn't know what to look for.

Lovely movements? Neither use movements that are particularly well finished or decorated but they do the job.

The Explorer and Black Bay Bronze are quite different, but both good watches.

Buy the one you like best.

My finger is hovering over the buy button on a Tudor. Through work I can get an 18% discount at Goldsmiths, but deal ends Sunday.
Only the Beckham association is putting me off !
