Picked up my brand new 440i last Friday and firstly, what an amazing car, over the moon with it.

My only concern is fuel consumption. Currently getting around 24MPG, this is without me really putting my foot down at all and driving in comfort mode. Really want to play with it a little bit in sport mode, but I don't want to be averaging sub 20mpg as it's completely impractical and I might as well have gone for an M4!

Be good to hear from other 440i owners what they're averaging?

Also, can I expect MPG to increase once I break the car in a bit? Only done 200 miles so will this improve when the ECU calibrates properly etc?

Thanks!

Not a 440i, but my friend has a 540i with the same engine, his is over a year old and has 15k on it. He gets 29-32 MPG average.

Cracking engine!

It’s a 3.0 petrol turbo so is far from an economical engine.

It’s very hard to make any comment on individual mpg as there is so much variation in drivers and cars to give much helpful advice.

Measuring real mpg rather than what the car tells you is always helpful.

Does it have “floating centre caps”? Apparently they increase mpg by 5.73. (I made that bit up).

Maybe it does need to loosen up.

You should be seeing circa average 30 with mixed driving.

I do on my 435i and I do a lot of fairly brisk acceleration, motorway driving and round down (50/50)

I'd have to be giving it some to average 24 and I'd expect the 440i to be slightly better than the older engine? Could be wrong.

24 sounds about right, 430d/435d owners never get more than 40 around town, real world average of about 35 with mixed driving.

24 for a petrol equivalent sounds about right considering the weather and 200 miles on the clock.

I don’t expect you to get more than 30 unless you’re on the motorway often.

I do get what you mean though about taking it easy, that’s the reason I went for a diesel, with my driving, I get 34 maximum but I’m enjoying the car and power. If I had gone for the 435i (at the time), then I wouldn’t have seen more than 20 and that’s just completely impractical as you said.

Ouch!

I've had my 440i GC for just over a year.
Gentle running in speeds (no kickdown, below 4000 rpm and 100mph according to the book) had me showing well into the 40's, probably a best journey figure of 48mpg. This could be bettered. Didn't use the eco pro thing.
Since then, my general average has been around 35mpg.
Lows have been 13 to 15mpg towing a 1600kg caravan at speed.
Yesterday I had the misfortune to do some short stop start runs around Manchester that showed a miserable 25mpg. By the time i got home some 40 miles later, the average was up to 34mpg.

I am really impressed with the fuel economy - when I bought it, I had in mind that anything over 28mpg would be good. I had a 335d Touring before this, and that didn't do much more to the gallon, although it was better towing.

The '18s are a little different as they have another box in the exhaust system, so maybe its that which is hitting you.

Lovely engine though.
Sensible family hatchback.

Ive had mine since May and am averaging about 30mpg across the last 6.5k miles.

On a decent run to work (20 miles, mixed) I can easily top 35mpg, and have seen above 40mpg a fair number of times.

If driven carefully it's as economical as a 2.0T, if not better. Definitely far better on fuel than the Giulia Veloce it replaced. So far I'm really impressed.

I’m getting 33mpg in a 340 xdrive touring with the performance pack. Mostly a mixture of motorway and alpine passes. Very little town driving.

My long term average (22k) in a 340i running 98 ron is a shade under 33, I don't hang around but I also don't use sport that often because A, you sound like a bit of tool with all the farty bang pops, B the throttle mapping is too harsh, especially this time of year (all IMO of course)

I drove a 630d GT for nearly 3 weeks and found the engine brilliant but it runs out of puff past 60, not saying it’s slow but I felt the difference over my less powerful 430d (less torque and HP).

Not saying it’s an issue but if you’re used to a C63, I’d suggest a 540i for the noise and performance top end.

I used to get 24mpg from my F80 M3 in stop start commuting. Would be disappointing to get the same from something with much less oomph.

That's about what I got in my M2 with the old inefficient N55 engine. Doesn't sound great to me! Then again if it's brand new it'll probably have some breaking in to do and should improve with time.

I've had a 335xd for the last couple of years, and I do mainly mixed with an emphasis on town driving short journeys throughout the day. 'm quite hard driving wise with the car and its registering 41.5 having not been reset over the last year odd.

Its actually a revelation as I think I enjoy driving it more than I did the M5 which after a while I was driving like miss daisy to get it up to 20-25.
I came from never having a had a diesel before to now being a convert.

I bought a 435i earlier in the year, and MPG is very variable dependent on use, which seems reasonable bearing in mind the nature of the car.

I use Fuelly to measure mpg which is probably a fair bit more accurate than the car's MPG reading. So far I'm averaging 33.9 over about 5,000 miles, but extremes are exactly 40mpg on a tank almost entirely on motorway, down to 22.45 on a load of town use!

You can easily get 40mpg at a steady 70 on the motorway - on Tesco fuel my 340i is currently averaging just under 34mpg.

This would suggest you're at the low end: http://www.fuelly.com/car/bmw/440i_gran_coupe

M140i, so same engine but lighter body. I'm averaging just shy of 30mpg with a very urban-heavy driving profile. Record run is 46mpg up to Manchester.
Mid-high 20s sounds like the right ballpark for a similar driving profile. Lots of distance runs, I'd be expecting and average of low 30s.

You might be surprised what a difference Eco mode makes on a run too!

I honestly don't know how so many people on PH claim to be getting the mpg figures they do.
Because they own them, drive them, live with them, and can see the mpg readout / do the fuel calculations.

But, unless you're driving your Mum everywhere, you won't get anywhere near it.
My Mom's never been anywhere near my car (she lives in France) and I still average 30mpg over a tank. I don't even have to try for that, and I use the performance frequently. It stays in sport a lot during my commute because of the addictive exhaust note with the MPPSK.

I saw 41mpg today on a 50 mile return trip to Coventry. All motorway at 70+mph, some 50mph ave speed areas on the M6.
