In my never ending quest to be employer of the year (!) I am pondering the following.
All staff can work from home one day a month and scheduled days however if one abuses it the whole scheme is cancelled.

No. Terrible trouble. Beyond a breach of employment law. Beyond even a human rights infringement. If just one person is punished (eg loses privileges) as a result of the actions of others, you'll be in contravention of the Warsaw Convention provisions on collective punishment ;>

It does sound like a dreadful plan, if I am honest. If they can work from home, let em. Don't make working from home sound like a holiday, make it normal, and buy less desks (and coffee)

If I were still employed I'd prefer something to incentivise (I don't think it's a word, I don't care, it should be) rather than something which could be lost due to someone else not towing the line. One company I worked for rewarded you with an extra days annual holiday for each year you worked there. After 9 years service 31 days holiday was quite nice, and one reason to not take my skills elsewhere.
Maybe if staff had to earn the right to work at home on certain days instead?

work from home 3/4 days a week to be honest makes no difference to my productivity

in fact i'm normally more productive from the sofa than the office as i dont have people dropping in and out bugging me and distracting me for irrelevant stuff

Why not let all staff work from home? This is the year 2018 and not 1918 after all. So long as their workload for the day is completed, do you care where they do it from? I wish more companies would get with the times and start trusting people rather than essentially forcing them to trudge along congested roads to and from some dull office block every day just so you can keep an eye on them. Get with the times man! wobble

Make it more of a reward than a punishment. If someone is doing a good job send them home at lunchtime. A feel good factor can develop and the next time it might be them. You could send home 2 people on occasions. Make it a Friday thing so they get a longer weekend??

This will just create resentment amongst the staff and all sorts of accusations of favouritism and other nonsense will start.

Compressed working hours are really popular around here, work a litttle extra time each day and get it back as an extra day off. Could do a day a month in line with your OP, or more frequently.

What’s the job?

Is there any reason you have them working in a office apart from out of date views?

Are you under any illusion that because people are in a office that you’re getting 8 hours work out of them? Because you are not.

If I ran a business I would let them all work from home, have a small office for people to use for meetings and if they want to use it (the sprogs are running riot etc) and possibly trial a 6 hour working day.

People will abuse the system if they want, but it will show because the works not getting done, and if you’re not completing work correctly and on time within reason then you don’t deserve a job

We currently have 4 full time hires who don’t come into the office so we can work it but the “team” feeling of getting a project over the line or performing just doesn’t work with home workers as well as office based.

confused

You're an ecommerce business according to your profile. Everything you do can be done from home with relative ease and a bit of organisation. There's a near infinite amount of online tools and applications to make the feeling of working as a team a piece of cake. Sounds like you're making excuses to me, perhaps in an attempt to justify the outlay of the place in your profile picture maybe? wink

I think your office based "team" would far more appreciate being able to work from home than any other wild incentives that you manage to dream up. 2p fwiw.

Google, Facebook and other big online businesses don’t encourage home working

Building teams etc needs people to get to know each other

I used to manage a large team in the City, one thing I learnt is staff behaviours as a collective was the
toughest part of the job.

I think your asking for trouble. If your proposing to potentially remove everyone’s ‘reward’ on the actions of one, your just setting yourself up for hassle. You’d be better of allowing them to earn a day off by working extra hours.

Do not penalise a team on the actions on one. Trust me.

The office situation just got worse we’ve signed up for 3 years!
I think we could try a bit more home working, we use Asana and Harvest with Slack as comms.
Might have a trial in the new year - at least then I get an office to myself 🤭

Make it everyday whenever they want unless required to be in for a client meeting.

You work in technology so act like you're not working in the 1960s. biggrin

Flexible hours around a set of core hours in the office, say 10-4. People can avoid rush hour, let the plumber in and generally do some work admin either side of being in the office for meetings, brainstorming and of course, thinking outside the box PEOPLE!

With the option for people to request a full WfH day if required, maybe to manage workload or personal reasons. For example, my windscreen needs replacing, it's a 9-5 appointment and will be 90 mins. It'd be great to work from home, so I can get it replaced, but I'm core services so can't really.
