Which would you buy and why if you were choosing between these 3 bikes. All within a grand of each other, but i'll list the cheapest one first, dearest one last.
2007 Ducati 1098S. Ohlins front and rear. Higher spec Brembo front brakes. Stock pipes.
2009 Ducati 1198. No exotic extra spec. Stock pipes.
2013 Ducati 899 Panigale. Standard spec. Stock pipes.
Now i know the Panigale has the newer engine design with no more cam belt changes every fortnight (well not that bad but you know the score) and the new no-frame design, plus it is much easier on the body than the first 2 but are they purer looking in your view, as they changed little from the iconic ground-breaking 916? Are the first 2 simply too gorgeous looking to refuse?
What would you buy?

This right here. You need to get a nice set of Termis or an Akra on it to let it breathe.

Good bike. Had 2 of them, (2002 and 2016), along with 2x Fireblade, 1x GSXR1000 and 2x ZX-10R, but i fancy something from Ducati with 2 cylinders again, my last one being a 999R in 2003. Great bike.
May well go with the Panigale for the better riding position for the road, better dashboard, the cheaper maintenance and the traction control and abs, things many people say you don't need but just like a mobile 'phone or television, something few people want to not have once they've had them.
But i get the 1098S shouts, fine bike for just £6,100. The Panigale is £7150.

My 1198 has proven expensive to run; an engine rebuild saw to that due to the way it was (incorrectly) built at the factory. 1098s have been known to have similar issues.

It’s a wonderful bike (and scarily quick now blueprinted), but in that price range, I’d consider the Panigale.

1098S - future classic and prettier than the base 1198. 1198 is more brutal but 1098S nicer to ride. The 1198 engine is more robust though (gearbox less so). Get some Termis and a DP ECU and it's heaven.

I can’t really help with the 1098 or 1198 but I have ridden a friends 899 a few times and thought it was a great bike.

Do any of them come without an expanding plastic petrol tank...

I had a 1098s for a few years, 27k miles road and track, it never skipped a beat. Faultless.

What has that got to do with their well documented plastic tank issue today?

I got a 2015 899 for the reliability and technology that has and because as you i appreciate the looks/pedigree got a 2002 998s to keep her company. On paper fairly similar (bhp, colour, price new, even name!). But with more than a decade difference ride very different. The 998s feels handmade and cost a lot more to run, has every bit analogue feeling opening the gas or braking. The 899 is much simpler to use. The riding position is easier to get comfortable too (only marginally though). I've only been riding for 3 yrs now so the tech of the 899 is most welcome in my case.

If I were in that position - not 899, no matter how more modern it is in comparison to the other two.
I rode it, it is just as loud as the bigger ones, gets just as hot under the ass in any kind of stop-and-go traffic, but it is too plain vanilla in comparison with the other two

£7.1k is a decent price for an 899 if it’s not been to the moon and back. Can’t find anything under 7.5k. Rode the 959 recently and liked it - understand is very similar to the 899 as slightly more power but heavier.

1098S all day long from that list, special enough, visceral enough and stunning to look at, its the only generation of modern Ducati superbike I don't have and when funds allow will join the 996, 999 and Pani, its like the missing link ..... 1098R is my holy grail after a 996R ......

See I'd beg to differ, I never owned a 1098/1198 but rode a few, awesome performance as you'd expect but heavy, slow to turn in comparison to my Panigale.

The 1098/1198 will be a more visceral experience but the game has moved on so I'd go 899 now.
