Discussion
I'm discussing a consulting opportunity where I would be hired at a level where I would be expected to do some business development work alongside my day to day project work. This is something that is entirely alien to me and I'm not sure how I feel about it.
Is there anybody here that has a similar element to their work that might give me some pointers as to what this might entail?
FYI this is a boutique consultancy rather than a big 4.
TiA.

Be careful to have a very clear statement of your objectives, target and how you will be supported to achieve it.
There's a world of difference between being given some existing customers (or even prospects) and asked to generate revenue, compared with being told to go off and prospect yourself relying entirely on your own network of contacts.
Boutique Consultancy sounds to me as though you are at risk of being seen as a source of new leads, rather than being given support in generating work.
Do you have a strong network of contacts to whom you could pitch?

Sounds more like a tip of the spear thing. You do your thing, make a good fist of it, and make sure you point out that you could, as a favour solve those niggling little issues the new work has uncovered. If you could just peruse and sign this Change Request, we'll get straight on it, sir.
Beyond that, be wary, as you ain't a salesman, or you would be paid like one

Pretty much how it is for me and others I know in smaller consultancies.Beyond that, be wary, as you ain't a salesman, or you would be paid like one

The expectation is to pick up more work from current contracts wherever possible. It’s a natural thing to do anyway, as far as I’m concerned.
So for OP it depends on what exactly the expectation is. Is the potential employer just adding a side note that you’re expected to try to pick up new business as you go? Or are they specifically targeting £xxxxx of new business as part of the role?
