When my engine was put back recently the hose that runs from the top of the swirl pot to the expansion tank wasn't put back properly.
It was tie wrapped to the swirl tank and just exited down the side under the engine bay. I have since fixed it and reconnected to the expansion tank.

Just wondering why someone who i know is proficient with these cars would do that am i missing something or was it maybe just the apprentice being helpful ?

Can't think of any good reason to do that. Presumably the pressure cap was put back on the swirl tank otherwise you'd have been running unpressurized?

Are you sure the pressure cap should be on the swirl tank

Like GV8S says, can't see any reason why that would have been done.

Forgive the obvious question, but have you asked the mechanic why the expansion hose was left off ?

The general considered opinion is that assuming the correct pressure cap is on the swirl pot the expansion tank is the only way to stop any residuel water being dumped on the garage floor if you have just returned from a spirited run !
