Tassimo Coffee machines, worth it?
Discussion
I know different people have different needs and expectations of a Coffee machine but are the Tassimo ones worth it?
I'm just looking for a cheep and cheerful one that will make coffee and other stuff. Also we are due a baby soon and others I have spoken to have said a machine is a god send.
Looking on Amazon at the moment there is a Bosch Tassimo My Way for £70. Any others I need to look at for around that price?
Thanks

My brother has a Tassimo (received as a wedding gift) and I asked him about his as I was looking at pod/capsule-based machines. He said that if you like 'novelty' coffees (Bailey Latte/Costa/Cadburys Hot Choc etc) then Tassimo's the way to go but if he were buying for himself now he'd go the Nespresso route for 'proper' coffees.
It's more than you were looking at but I've got one of these coming on Tuesday: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B013GGO0IC/ref...
Depends what kind of coffee you want I guess? There are plenty of Nespresso machines around the £70 mark too.

Either the Nespresso or the Lavazza modo mio machines work well, for proper coffee. If you like frothy milk I prefer the Lavazza milk heater to the Nespresso Aerocino, it's much easier to clean and pour from. They usually have deals with the coffee machine and milk heater combined.
The OH swears by the Lavazza, personally I prefer a decent grinder and a stove top or cafetiere, but wont turn a pod coffee down if it's made for me.
A mate has one of the Tassimo machines and if you like a hot chocolate or an oversweet hazelnut latte kind of thing they appear to be fine, but not to my taste.

Decent enough if you’re not that fussy about your coffee or need it to be super practical. High quality bean-to-cup with good beans will run rings around it but they require more maintenance and cleaning.
Tassimo pods are also incredibly wasteful and if we all used them then landfills would be full of plastic pods. They’re not readily recyclable unless you can find one of the special stations somewhere local. Most people just chuck them in the bin so they’ll end up in a hole in the ground.

I didn't understand why they make them non-recyclable either, seems incredibly wasteful in this day and age. Nespresso ones are aluminium so can be recycled.IMHO the single pod serving machines have their place. I used to make a pot of filter coffee and have a cup, and on occasion my wife may have had one too, but 80% of the brew was wasted. In our house the convenience and small volume makes them "worth it".
However, where the model falls down is if you have guests, then the cost of the pods adds up rather quickly
(4 guests having a couple of hot drinks each can use almost a sleeve / box)

Yeah filter coffee tends to make a lot of waste. Especially if you’re on your own. Bean to cups are perfect in this regard as they make coffee on demand, per cup or glass. However, where the model falls down is if you have guests, then the cost of the pods adds up rather quickly

But yes, pod machines are great for convenience and cost.
I had both and prefer the Nespresso for classic coffee taste.
Sure you can buy a “proper” machine, a dedicated coffee grinder etc and spend over a £1000 but unless you really love coffee I don’t think it’s worth the hassle for the extra quality brew you get.
Get the Nespresso... go for the classic pods not the new Vertuo ones. Milk frother of your choice. I have a Severin and that is pretty decent.

I have a Tassimo and I’d class it as a hot drinks machine rather than a coffee maker.
It’s fine for my occasional use but the milky coffees are a bit too sweet and the coffee not that strong. Makes great hot chocolate though 👌
I’d say the nespresso makes better coffee and has a much larger selection of pods to choose from both genuine and aftermarket.
If your bothered the waste from the Tassimo capsules is greater too and they only have a few collection centres to recycle them.

My espresso machine and grinder cost about £170 all in and they've been used every day for 3 years. I can make a black coffee or a latte in a couple of minutes and the only waste is coffee grounds. I don't understand the appeal of the pod machines at all.

Same.Even the guy who invented them (for very low volume use) has publicly said he wishes he had never been involved.
We have couple of cafetieres, which cater from 1-2 cups through to a family of 47 and makes a nice cup of whatever coffee you want.
We also stock a decent instant, because while a different drink, it has its own place for a rushed morning.

That’s fine Zed and I had those in the past the Nespresso tends to beat those both in taste and convenience. We had that type for over 20 years before converting to Nespresso and there is no going back.
When I said proper it’s ones like an ECM barista or a Rancilio Silvia and a proper coffee grinder like an Eureka Mignon. Now this is the PH answer and you need to take coffee and particularly expressos very seriously. I do like espressos as I was raised in a country with tradition on that brew but I don’t like them enough to spend that amount of money where temperature, pressure, etc can be tweaked finely for bed extraction. Those machines require a grinder that complements its quality for best results. It is noticeable but if no value for me.
Between a cheaper version and a Nespresso que coffee taste is probably best, more convenient on the pod system. But different machines, different prices, different taste buds. Use the one you prefer off course.
IMHO a cheap grinder, coffee machine is not worth the clean up, etc etc the pod gives a more consistent and better coffee. In my opinion off course!

This is where I got to. I like coffee (a lot) but not so much that I can be bothered to have to set up what amounts to a science experiment to get a cuppa. With a pod machine I can have a really decent Nespresso in the morning (instead of a far-inferior instant) and where I certainly wouldn't be faffing about with a french press for a single cup. Add in the consistency and no-mess and it's hard to say no. It's clearly not as good as an all-singing, all-dancing grinder and whatnot but if it gets 80% of the way there with 5% of the hassle then sign me up.
