Food shop.
Who should put the Next customer sign on conveyor?
The person who has finished loading shopping, or the person starting to load shopping?

No butlers, No waitrose and no planes taking off.

I always do it once I have finished putting the stuff on the line because usually the little "next" sign is closer to me...

As above but if I approach a till when it's quiet and no queue, I'll pop it on myself so not to get it mixed up with the person in front having her shopping scanned. (

I almost always put it down before I start loading my shopping onto the belt and also place one after when I’m finished loading it.

Seem many people don’t bother with either

Great to see the truly important issues finally being raised on PH.
In an ideal world, the cashier, shopper in checkout action and shopper waiting for checkout action should be analysing the likelihood of shopping trolley contents being mixed up as they are loaded on to the conveyor. Once you get to a fair likelihood of this happening, anyone of the aforementioned parties should take responsibility for placing the divider in the correct position.
If all three parties are paying the correct attention, they will note the divider is in position and ideally acknowledge the placer’s proactivity.

Unfortunately one person not paying correct attention can result in a break in the ‘Beejam’s Triangle’ as it is known, with various negative consequences possible which I won’t go in to as I don’t have time for that now.

If my shopping is going well and I end up with a bit of extra time I'll often stay by the till for a while (never more than 30 mins or it can get weird) putting the Next Customer signs on and off for people so they don't have to it. It creates a jovial atmosphere and it's just good to give a bit back sometimes.

whoever is already there with shopping should be the one to put the divider down. usually because there's only so many, and they don't reach right to the end of the belt..

so if someone is there with shopping already on the belt, they should put it down,
if you're already there with your shopping on the belt, you put it down for the next person.

If the person before me has not put the next customer baton on the conveyor I will make a point of reaching over to get it, making sure that I steady myself by putting my other hand on something squishy in their shopping.
So if you get home with flattened belgian buns, think about what you just did.

If the person in front hasn't put the sign down I put my shopping on there and give them a smile in the hope they will pay for my shopping.

Sadly they always put the sign there frown

I’m definitely doing this from now on. I might even mutter ‘talks the torque’ under my breath when doing so.. it seems less confrontational than ‘subhuman scum’

I keep on trying to buy one of the "next customer" separators by mixing it in with my shopping, but the staff always find it and put it to one side.

They're trained for that.

No.

Frozen sausages (people buy those?) go near the front because they can support the subsequent fruit, bread, custard tart or whatever without deforming.
