I filled by self assessment this year and subsequently in October my tax code changed from 737 to 856. At the same time I received a payment back from the HMRC and also last month my paye tax contribution was reduced by a couple of hundred quid (Happy Days!) this month I notice that my tax contribution is back to the same as before the code change - it that usual? my gross pay is unchanged

Assuming the new tax code wasn't week 1 you've had a rebate from 06/04/18 to the date of your previous pay day. Your most recent pay is now correctly taxed.

It should be marginally more than two pay packets ago!

Thanks 2sb,
I see that the repayment to the bank is an overpayment refund, and presumably the one off £200 reduced contribution was part of this too, this months tax is actually £40 less than 2 months ago, so presume this is the going forward number.

looks about right - you should take this up professionally.

not quite as well off as I hoped then.
