Possible to hack the key/locks of a 3 series?
Discussion

Short version - press to open keyfob with keyless push button start. Are these vulnerable to relay hack type attacks?
Background
Wife got to the car this morning and the drivers door was open and the car smelt of cigarettes. It had been rifled through and some random stuff taken from inside. Parking change, an old iPod classis (v annoying!) but nothing of note, since it's kept spotless. No damage to the car at all.
The car requires a button press to open the doors but has keyless ignition.
Wife is certain is was locked - she's pretty methodical.
One key was at the back of the house, the other upstairs.
Lots of reports on a local forum about cars being opened in our area. All aparently locked and no damage done.
Of course, she could have forgotten to lock and it and just be pure coincidence but given the volume of other reports and warnings locally it seems like someone may be out and about with some gizmo.
Apart from being annoyed, I have a few questions
- is this plausible to use a scanner/repeater style method on a press to open a 3 series without keyless entry?
- if so, surely the car was also startable so why didn't they nick it!
- therefore presume it's a petty criminal, do they really have access to this kind of kit?
Typically I have key pouches in my Amazon basket right now. Doh! Will get some just to be safe.
