530d GT - real world
Discussion
I have a 535d GT, obviously more power and greater consumption. On a run at a steady 75, it's doing around 47-48. Overall, at the moment, it's showing 32, but that's mostly shortish journeys (10-15 miles)on a mix of urban and rural roads. There is a great temptation to use the power and wave of torque and that obviously affects mpg. The 530 should be a bit more economical.
It will likely get 7 series MPG, mid to late 40's. It is a lighter 7 series AFAIK, but could be heavier too, not sure. Either way, you're looking at 40. Difference in MPG again is marginal if you drive the 535d like the 530d. That second turbo however is addictive and often leads to less MPG when used 'excessively'. Am told it is a 1-2mpg difference in the X5 with these engines. Great engine either way.

I second the temptation, I don’t have a 530d GT but I had a 630d GT for a few weeks and averaged 25, 2017 model. To be honest it was a loan car and I did drive it like I stole it however as it’s such a big lump, the performance is addictive as it’s like a really fast train Thanks guys but answers so far highlight my concern...a 630d can return 25...totally not what I need.....I’d rather not guess it can be 40 and find it’s 32. I’m looking for a long term daily and it will be doing mileage, so I’d like to try to get some real experiences...I just know these cars don’t make the ‘book rates.

I took my 430d (same engine as 530d gt) to Hertfordshire from Surrey and back lots of stop start traffic, it was in eco pro the whole time and I got 47. This was the day before yesterday, since then I’ve been doing a few trips around town and it dropped to 37, still dropping and I’m trying to keep it at 40mpg and I just can’t. A 530d gt will be a lot heavier and less aerodynamic. If you’re after economy, the 20d is your best bet, my friend in his F10 520d rarely gets less than 40 and he’s got a heavy foot!
Hmm. The N57 has the odd few issues here and there, combined with a rear mounted timing chain I wouldn't recommend a remap. The M57 engine is fine for remaps but isn't in the GT. However, it is the N57 engine, it is more economical than the M57, it is likely to get 40mpg+ on a run, which if you are doing high miles will be close to what you get average. If buying, a transmission reset would help too, some light driving would trick the car into shifting lower etc, would help with fuel economy.
Some stats from my 2011 330d over the last 111,000 miles...
I get an indicated 48.7 mpg and have done since almost new - measured old school however it's more like 45ish. That's a daily commute of 50 miles round trip, about 70% motorway and 30% A Roads.
It's a pretty consistent beast. I would say that it's definitively better on premium diesel - I used to get around 525 miles to a tank during my first year of ownership - switched to premium and it's unusual for me to not get less than 575 per tank - it will top 600 on a road-trip easily. I picked it up on 8k an will hit 112k this month
(premium diesel for years now - I've done the maths a few times and it's better value than standard, not by a great deal, but it's there!)

For a 3.0 i'm impressed.
It gets used 90% on an 80 mile each way commute consisting of 15 miles of b roads, 60 miles of dual carriageway, 5 miles of city.
I drive economically and stick to speed limits.
Tank range is about 650 miles on £75
