I was travelling down the M1 and could see this ahead of me, as I got closer I could see it was just a normal motorway maintenance van.

Why the speed camera sign?
Clearly they don't have a speed camera inside nor does a contractor have any 'powers' to catch someone speeding so why?

I believe some cotractors use camera vans at roadworks to spot the numpties who ignore the warning signs etc.

I think the theory is that they have cameras fitted and will/ can use what is recorded against you should you do something naughty (such as drive in a closed lane/ hard shoulder) or it could be like the tin foilers say and a deliberate plan to break up the monarchy, pound, target all motorists etc. etc. etc.

eta. that sign doesn't actually mean "speed camera" it means that a camera may be used to enforce regulations which leads back to my first point above.

Going to order one and whack it on my rear window then.
"Just letting people know i'm a dash cam wker officer.."

I like the idea of breaking up the monarchy. Very convincing haha.

It's been Highways England Traffic Officers for such a long time too...

...and they don't look like police cars, neither. They're different in many ways. If you're struggling with it, get your eyes tested. Don't be Mr Magoo, sitting behind a HETO car at 65 mph, terrified to overtake because you think it might be plod, because that would suggest that the traffic officers aren't the "wkers" in the scenario.

If your eyes come up OK when tested, and you still struggle? That's nature's way of suggesting you should stop driving, for your own safety, and that of other road users...

Yes but but but errrrrm they're fluorescent so must be like the police rolleyes nothing to do with the fact that they do need to be visible, purely that they "want you to think they're plod" I saw another guy thinking he was plod driving along in a big truck with tarmac in the back too, had police signs (well fluorescent stripes), dirty impersonating git.

You honestly don't think that looks a bit like a police car from a distance?

Doesn't particularly bother me either way but I can certainly see a couple of small similarities, especially on a dark rainy motorway. I'm not suggesting they're "pretending" to be BIB for some mysterious reason either.

I can honestly say, a HATO vehicle has never made me panic and think it was a police vehicle, you can tell within a second that it's not.

Yup, you can easily tell. Usually by the numpties, queuing up behind.

I’m so glad you’re so clever that you know exactly the scenario to which I’m referring that it allows you to be so vitriolic & just plain rude.

Must be so infuriating that the rest of the world does not have your level of perfect!

Totally off topic, I remember the founders of that business when they ran a small team of sub-contracting trench diggers in Preston in the early 90's. It's warming to see that the business has grown to a £50m annual turnover since then.

Nah, not on a highway maintenance van.

I can readily tell the difference, sometimes they cannot. Best example was when I legally went through a red light and they illegally followed me to stop me, outside their remit, to try and give me a talking to. That turned interesting and could have ended up badly.
