My girlfriend is currently looking to upgrade her faithful Citroen C1 to something a bit nicer, and has decided on an A3 / 1 series. She has seen an approved used 2014 BMW 116d for £10k with 34k miles on it, and it seems to fit the bill well. Is there anything in particular to be on the look out on these?

As it happens my mother has a 118i which is a fantastic little car, all it has needed in 5 years and 60k is a water pump which was covered by the warranty. They seem well equipped as standard so no worries there, and the car itself is a lovely thing so we are happy with the 1 series in general.

It is the older N47 version she is looking at, I am aware the early versions of this had timing chain issues but seem to remember this was resolved with the later models, is this correct? And if so, which year did this come into effect?

Appreciate any help smile

I know these aren't the most exciting of cars... I assume they will probably be fine? smile

If she is set on the 1 series then yes I believe the timing chain issues were resolved by 2014
However I would try to steer her to golf or a3 as in most ways they are better cars

We used to have 2012 118d SE Auto which is same basic engine , great car kept for 4 years 50, 000 miles. Only isssues we had were the Auto wipers kept going flat out & a faulty electric rear window. All sorted under warranty.

Good for motorway cruising around 48 MPG cruising around 85ish.

If I was doing only short trips I would reccomend a petrol though , to avoid future DPF issues.

Probably a good car. My personal view is that for a short car, unless you are an enthusiastic driver, 1 series are space-inefficient. For that size I would go for FWD.

Thanks for the input chaps.

Good to hear there are no major issues, sounds like it could be a winner. It will be used for a decent commute (20 miles each way on NSL A roads) and occasional 100 mile trips, I would imagine a DPF would be ok with that?

Interestingly the equivalent A3 seems to be quite a bit dearer, but a Golf might be worth investigating. Space wise I think it will be ok, especially coming from a C1, but I will mention it again as its a good point.

1 series are great cars, I ran the older generation E81 2009 118d, put 180k on it, nothing but a exhaust flexi (common issue) and EGR (common any diesel issue)

Timing chains should be better now, my era was in the danger of snapping zone.

Get one and service it every 8k (this is the secret) and change gear/diff oil every 40k and your good to go. I had people literally snapping at my heals when sold mine even with it's mileage, as it was serviced within an inch of its life!

DPFs on the BMs are rated for 300k+ and usually only fail due to other factors e.g. glow plugs / thermostat etc, more reliable than than other marques in that respect.

I run a 2012 3er 318d Touring (same engine essentially) just ticked over 100k....I ain't worried one bit, serviced on the dot every 8/10k.

They are great engines and have a bad rap tbh but learn to look after them they will be fine, they are brisk and linear and perfect for everyday driving. Good luck.

Funnily I drove both back to back and the Golf/A3 were pretty much worse in most ways (imvho) and I bought the BM.
