I was driving down the road, perfectly smooth and heard a loud snapping noise. Pulled over and the rear offside was sitting like a VAG scene Golf. I assumed the coil spring had snapped. Turns out the cradle the spring sits in has snapped off from the axle from what I can see. 03 Honda Jazz. Bit of surface rust but nothing unusual for an older car and certainly not enough to cause failure. My mechanic reckons he can weld it up but I'm not sure I'd trust it to be honest.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

The spring seat you are referring to was welded to the beam in the first place, so totally depends on the type of break really. Hard to say without seeing pictures. If the mechanic is happy to weld it up and offer some sort of warranty if it goes again then I'd be happy to let him crack on.

From a quick look online it looks like the rear beam hasn't changed between 03 and the later cars, it might be an idea to look into this more and if it will fit buy a rear beam from a newer car (2015 looks the same to me) and get it fitted if you want to keep the car long term.

I'd weld it back on. Why wouldn't you trust it after?
