anybody got any genuine BMW M3 E92 info on oil consumption , mine is using a litre every 800 miles , took it back to bm , they said the official tech notes for this model is 650 miles to a quart , at that rate i will need an oil well of my own just to run my car , spoke to guys at thorney motorsport and they said it seems excesses , car is still under bmw used car warranty, anybody shed some light please.

My e92 se needed a litre of oil every 1000 miles. BMW checked the oil consumption under warranty and concluded that the amount of oil used after covering a 1000 miles was within BMW tollorence. I’ve now had the car for five years and it can vary between 500 and 750 miles before I have to add a litre of oil. I’ve switched to 5-40 oil which is cheaper and I think suits the older engine. Mine needs a top up every 6 months - but I don’t do many miles - seems normal

Due to a lack of use my car is serviced every 4K miles (2 years) and has never required a top-up between services in the 7 years I've owned it.

Over 8k miles my oil level has dropped from 3/4 to 1/2 and have not needed to top up at all . It’s a 2011 e92 dct with 41k miles on it.

I've put two litres in my 2012 DCT since January, done around 10K miles. I would say that it using virtually no oil compared to other cars I've had including other 3 series cars.

I ran one for 20,000 miles and it never needed a drop between 15k service intervals.

30k trouble free miles in my previous M3 but it did require at least half a litre of oil every 1k miles or so.

I think its been established across a few threads over the years that if you don't use the car regularly or do very short runs then it does use quite a bit of oil.

Generally people who say doesn't use much or not at all are cars generally used for a decent commute each day: meaning it gets up to temp and gets used for a certain period etc.

OP how do you use the car and how often?

I did 10k miles in 10 months in my E92 M3, and I only recall putting 2 litres of oil in it. My E90 330i needed 5 litres of oil to cover the same mileage though.

Mine has never used anything like as much as the OPs (neither did my previous one).

At most, 1L between scheduled services.

Currently using the car only once a week (70 miles max) and even then, in the last 3000 miles, it has used no more than 0.5L

When I first bought mine I’d take it for a good drive about once a week. Was having to top up very frequently which concerned me at the time. In the latter stages of ownership I only ever used it as regular car and rarely put my foot down - the need to top up stopped completely, reading never changed. Concluded that they only drink oil when you rag them!

Iirc maybe 1 top up of around 750ml annually on mine, was doing circa 5k per annum. Short commutes and longer runs at the weekends. Make sure you only top up when it asks for 1lt, add just shy of the 1l. If you add smaller qtys it doesn't know what its getting and asks for it more often.
