Hi

I’m confused by all the different advice I’m getting.

I have a full car license. Gained in April 2002. I have category P on my license.

I am trying to find a definitive answer - if I complete my CBT this apparently validates my moped license up to 50cc so I can ride without L plates. Is this right?

If I complete the CBT can I also ride a 125cc with L plates for 2 years before needing to renew CBT?

I’m looking at getting to work on a moped/scooter.

I’ve been looking at the Honda Vision 50 as it’s good value - or if I can stretch to maybe a Peugeot 125cc speedfight 4?

Any recommendations. I’m commuting 12 miles each way on mainly 30mph roads in rush hour.

Thanks in advance.

upon completing your cbt you have a full 50cc licence, however DO NOT buy one they are lethal even in a 30 zone.
the same cbt will allow you a 125 for 2 yrs. this is the much better option . if you take the test on a auto (twist and go) this is all you will be allowed to ride ( no geared 125)

Please buy a chain or disc lock if you get a scooter, they are the thieves transport of choice atm any where in the uk.

The 2 year validation period is a pain in the arse for a 125. No idea why this needs to be in place.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll look at a twist and go 125. Any recommendations? Cheap as possible ideally. I’m looking to save money in the long run.

Cheers for the swift response! 👍🏻

You could go in the middle and get a new suzuki address 110, i think there only around £1999 new with a 3 yr warranty, Otherwise anything with a honda/yamaha badge and you wont go far wrong.

I've had a Honda PCX125 for 4 years now as my Town/Station commute bike.

All it's needed is MOT's and self servicing.

As said above, 50cc's will have every driver trying to get passed you.

Same. Had the PCX coming up to 3 years now and it's been reliable, but I have looked after it with the maintenance.

50cc would be a stretch for 2 miles, let alone 12. They are seriously slow, to the extent they will likely put you off 2 wheels. A 125 will keep up with general traffic in 30mph limits where a 50cc will really struggle.

new 2019 PCX is a great bike and looks good with LED lights available from just £2500 new with a free tracker too!
130mpg too I was so tempted to get one when my Africa twin was in for service as a runaround :

Mine has just turned 10,000 miles.

I get about 110mpg, it's a 2013 plate. I have the stop/start switched off so might get a bit more if I left it on.

I test rode a Piaggio 350 scooter recently. Yes it went well, but felt lardy at low speeds. And I'm not the tallest person in the world at 5'5" so it felt a little too high.

Got back on the PCX and it felt so light and agile, so I quickly decided to keep it.

And my local workshop said I should stick with the Honda.
