I'm a member of a club and their subs for 2019 are now due. Normally I send them a cheque by return but this year they've really pi55ed me off with a line in the letter that says "you will incur a £15 late subscription charge if not received by end of January". Can they do this, it really has annoyed me. I always attend the AGM and this wasn't mentioned at any meeting so I can't see how the "HonSec" can just impose this as he wishes.

Advice please>

Is there a contract?

Or perhaps more importantly, do you want to remain a member of the club?

Bit of a first world problem really.

So someone gives you at least 2 months notice that if your subs are late they'll charge you a late payment fee and you're angry about it?

Jesus wept

Pay it before the end of January FFS and yes, they can charge you whatever you like as long as they make you aware of it

When you get any group that requires any sort of payments, fees/subs etc, the treasurer always has a nightmare getting everyone to pay on time. His cash flow can depend on promptly paid income.
Realise this and just pay when it is required.

All the above are correct, [pedant mode on] however it normally takes agreement of the committee to bring this into existence - it may not have been an AGM issue though so you could enquire when this was agreed and ask for the mins of the meeting specifically for review

It's not Fight Club is it?

I've had issues with them before but I'm not allowed to talk about it.

Why don't you just send them a cheque as you normally do.

I don't understand your compliant. Perhaps there is something extra I can't see...!

Surely, as a person that pays promptly each year, you should be happy at the charge for late payment. It would tick me off if people were taking advantage and not paying.

Jack says he would prefer it if you referred to him as Minority Ethnic, if it's all the same to you.....

My club do something similar. It’s a huge problem every year getting the subs in, which is the main income source. Just pay.

Probably hidden in the articles of the club.

However, if the OP wants to continue to register his angst then send in a cheque by the end of January but post date it to whenever, therefore treasurer will have received the cheque but can’t use it!

It's not unusual with in-house club rules that the exec committee, or board of trustees, or whatever they're called, have powers to introduce rules during the current year, implement them and have them ratified retrospectively at the next available general meeting of members. The only risk they run is that they might have to reverse if the members don't ratify.

I was told you can't future date a cheque? I never queried it though, so I may have been lied to?
