Anyone on here into their CrossFit?
I have had a few CrossFit style PT sessions but my PT is off to join the RAF in the New Year so was thinking of joining a box and giving it a go instead of a regular gym. However, they don't seem to be cheap and the one I am looking at that has good reviews etc has a minimum of 12 months sign up so quite a big commitment.
I know some people love it, some people hate it and some people even say it is dangerous so was wondering if anyone on here has given it a go, especially over a normal gym?

I did it for 1.5 years looking for more strength for sport, and just general interest in getting fit. Excellent for getting you off the sofa. Only dangerous if you are pressured into using weights that are too heavy for you, or the trainer is poor. I stopped because it is mega money, and there wasn't a "box" near enough where we have just moved to to make it worthwhile. I can also run my own fitness now without encouragement so I go to a normal gym now.
There are some things which people sneer at, including me, like the kipping pull-ups, but overall it will get you into shape and you will get stronger very fast.
If you can't motivate yourself to work out, then I would definitely recommend something like Crossfit or F45.
f
k the haters.

k the haters.I know it's become a bit of a meme to hate on it, but nonetheless I could post about a million GIFs of people hurting themselves doing Crossfit so on that basis I would be wary of getting a poor instructor.
One clip I saw last night was a guy doing kipping pull ups (badly but nobody was stopping him), his hands slipped off and he landed on his head/neck and nearly on the bar of a barbell that had been left there presumably because they were doing some kind of supersets. It looks like total lunacy to me.
The flip side is, a fat girl I used to know from school has got in really good shape with it, and she can clean'n'jerk quite well.

The kipping pull-ups are completely ridiculous. I know a few people who have done it and it's made a massive difference to their overall fitness and condition. I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay the money when you can probably get similar results with some cardio work and a decent strength training programme in a normal gym.
I think the dislike for cross-fit comes out of the sense that crossfitters feel they have somehow found the secret key to getting strong and fit, and anyone not chucking tyres around and hitting them with a sledge hammer is wasting their time. It's the same reason people who talk about paleo or those who bang on about ketosis are hated

There is a bit of that.
There are a few good articles which cover off the pros and cons of crossfit. Mark Riptoe wrote one.
A google search of Uncle Rhabdo, or Pukie the Clown, make pretty depressing reading.

Never tried it and never saw the appeal.
I think you'd get more with a conventional gym membership. Bigger variety of equipment and probably a lot cheaper.
You can get just as strong and fit doing other types of exercise. You can also take the good stuff from crossfit and work it into your own program.

I think for a lot of people, the group aspect is pretty good motivation to push that little bit harder. I can definitely see the appeal in that regard. I think you'd get more with a conventional gym membership. Bigger variety of equipment and probably a lot cheaper.

However I'd want to be doing that under the supervision of somebody s
t hot on technique, when it comes to exercises that you could seriously hurt yourself doing.272BHP said:
I train at a cross fit gym now. I don't partake of any of the lessons I just use the gym facilities
One benefit is that I feel like a superhero with all the huge spongy plates I have to put on the bar to make it a decent weight!
The 5kg weights are the largest barbell at my local (council) gym. About 4" deep. One benefit is that I feel like a superhero with all the huge spongy plates I have to put on the bar to make it a decent weight!

I didn't know you could do that. I do like the space and given the crazy stuff they do, when I'm experimenting with new ideas, nobody will judge.

Edit: looks like all the local boxes require you to attend classes if you want access to the open gym.

I’ve been training at a CrossFit gym(box) for two and a bit years. I love it. For me, it’s changed my life, I’ve made loads of friends, transformed my body and been able to do thing I’d never think were possible. It’s not the only way and I listen and respect other’s training philosophy. And there is a group of CrossFitters who are w
kers but you’d get that in any gym/sports club.
Give it a try!! Where in the country are you?

I think crossfit is great- It's as safe as you make it.
Mediocre crossfitters almost always look in better nick than mediocre gym goers, possibly because its almost always full body training in crossfit, and possibly because it's against the clock, so they push harder. I'd imagine they're fitter too.
It's basically a lighter version of strongman at the base level.
And you can find vids of people doing anything stupid in training, regardless of affiliation.

Yeah, a bit of competition is good, and working out with others can be good motivation, but I bet more people get injured from trying to show off that way, or feeling rushed or under pressure. It's good to motivate, but another thing altogether to build up the mentality that more is better. Which it can be, if done right. However I'd want to be doing that under the supervision of somebody s

Pretty much 90% of my training is crossfit style hard circuits. Every day, I rotate what I consider to be CNS smashers with 10 min EMOM or AMRAP shorties.
SOme circuits are directly lifted wods, some are KB stuff, some are from t-nation, some I probably wrote myself.
I'd like to join a box...for someone to tune my OL, it's stupid money, that outs me off...plus I@m quite solitary in the gym...on the other hand I love their ethic, and I sometimes watch teamrichey vids on youtube.
the kippig thing is ridiculous though.

Agreed. I signed up to a Murph challenge at the local crossfit gym at the weekend and I've never actually seen them done before in this way. Pretty hilarious.
Did you complete murph with kippers?
Thanks for the replies everyone. I have done a bit more research and I think I will go for it.
