Happened across this in the last few weeks through my work and thought I’d mention it in case someone else ever has the same issue.......apologies for it being vague.

Car stolen in July/Aug this year, valued at 50k. Car is insured and leased from manufacturer finance services.

Payments are kept up on the car and insurance and car is eventually found in Europe on false plates and impounded by the relevant police force in that country.

Insurance company is about to pay out to manufacturer finance services when they discover car is in one piece in another country so insurance company cancel payout and tell the manufacturer it is their responsibility to collect the vehicle.

Manufacturer contact customer who had the vehicle stolen and say it’s the customers car, they’re still paying for it and the agreement is still in place so the customer should collect.

The insurance company confirm to customer that their policy only has £100 recovery and that it’s up to the customer to collect the car.

The manufacturer tells the customer that for them to collect the vehicle they have to default the customer on his agreement to gain control of the car and they’ll then bill the customer for collection and any loses on the value of the car, leaving the customer out of pocket and with a wrecked credit file.

Never come across this before and customer advised to get legal advice and to contact the insurance ombudsman.

Hopefully that makes sense and the reason for the post is to ensure that your insurance policy covers collection of your stolen vehicle should it be found in another country, it’s something I’ve never thought of checking.

Sounds like he has a crap insurance policy, who is it with?

Why you'd have a 50k car and some two bit cheap arse insurance beats me!

If it is roadworthy, fly out and bring it back, if it turns out it isn't, call the insurance company and tell them it is well fked up by the theft, then get them to recover it.

They’ve had the advice about collecting it but like most they just can’t get up and go get it I guess. Just waiting on confirmation from police as to where it’s held in the country it was found.

Like most people, I would imagine that the person in question had no idea how good or bad their insurance company/policy was until it's needed, by which time it's too late.

Without going off to check your documents, what does your policy state about recovering your stolen vehicle if it's found abroad...? Exactly.

As it’s still ongoing that’s about as much as I’d like to detail. It’s more of a reminder to check policies as it’s not something I’ve ever come across or worried about.

Usually they end up in bits or are found after the payout if at all so the insurance company recovers.

Baltic or Balkan? One group wouldn’t be too bad to extract the car from. Wouldn’t be too happy about the other one though!

If its in Poland (Which there is a large chance it may be) you are very welcome to have it recovered to our place (Near Inowroclaw) I can stick in our garage and collect you from the nearest Airport so you can drive it back. Genuine offer if it would help you out!

Thanks C that’s a very nice offer but it’s not Poland.

The recovery and backstory would make an interesting article for a car mag.

Which insurer is this? I've never seen a policy with a financial limit on recovery costs following accident, fire or theft. I think I can probably guess but I'll await an answer.

Six months since it was stolen and the insurance hasn’t paid out, but your friend has continued to pay them and the lease. I’d be going mental.
