E24 running cost daily use?
Discussion
Hi, yes I've got one.
Looked like this when I bought it (photos from advert)

However, i wanted to get it repainted as the previous job wasn't brilliant. This is what we found

It now looks like this :
Conclusion: I couldn't afford to restore it to the standard I wanted to, ie new trims, clips, headlining, sound deadening, mouldings etc. So I'm now fitting a giant turbo.

I absolutely love the old thing though. Just be very, very wary. This one was advertised as having zero rust.
Hope that helps.

Yup.
As regards to running costs, they have super long diffs as standard. Mine was a 3.07 which gave it a theoretical top speed of 180mph+. This means they're great on a cruise with the ability to nudge 30mpg.
Tax is the same as everything else larger than 1.6 litres and pre 2001 at £245..
However, some early E12 based models are in the no tax or mot needed bracket as they're now 40 years old. Food for thought..
Any other questions just ask.

I had my first E234 635CSi 20+ years ago, and most of them were rotten heaps of s
t even then. I was lucky to find a low mileage 1983 car (ex Tom Jones. It was tidy, see) that had already had new wings. Well, it was 12 years old in 1995.
They were lovely cars when new but like most old cars, are horrid now. Still great to drive but a never ending maintenance nightmare. Rust, rust, more rust, shagged cams, corroded cylinder heads, rust, snapped manifold studs, oil leaks, rust, rusted out front spring cups, rear beam bushes, rust, automatic gearboxes (the old 4HP22 slusher), eye watering parts costs (BMW will have your pants down and use your bum crack as a credit card swiper), those hateful old hydraulic servo brakes so you're into brake bombs, rusted/seized cross linkages, seized calipers, failing hydraulic brake rams, failed instruments because the frighteningly expensive SI circuit board has croaked, wet boot due to knackered tail light seals, engine running issues thanks to the old Motronic 1.0 / 1.1 system (crank TDC and speed sensors, motronic relay......)
You could run one everyday, but more than likely it would cripple you and you'd need a spare car. Don't underestimate how much one of these costs to maintain to a good working standard. That's before you get into cosmetics.

This might be a decent starting place - it's got @1500 quid's worth of wheels on.
