Hi all,
My girlfriend wishes to send her old laptop computer to her cousin in British Columbia, who is studying accountancy, and broke enough not to be able to afford one.
Firstly, from checking around couriers, it seems the cheapest I can find is about 70 quid from Parcelforce (it weighs 7.7kg)
However, the more pressing question is whether or not the recipient is going to be stung for import duties. Canada only allows gifts of up to CAN$60, and any value after that will be stung 10% import duty, then 7% goods and services tax and 7% provincial sales tax.
Looking on ebay, the value of the laptop is around CAN$350, so they will be potentially liable for $290 to be taxed. Is there any way around this? What if for instance we marked it as return of personal possessions as his father was over in Ireland recently, and after all it is obviously a used laptop?
Any experiences or ideas from the PH collective?

As she is family can you not make it out that you are returning it back to her after she lent it to you ?
Declare this on the relevant form (goods returning) and include a thank you card & small girle (smellie?)gift in with package mentioning how useful it was in recent exams etc...... so if MR Excise does look he's got good reason to not charge.

Cheers for the suggestion. We are going down the route of saying returning after her uncle accidentally left it behind on his recent trip to Ireland.
