E53 X5 cooling conundrum
Discussion
Folks, just picked up a 2005 X5 3.0 petrol, and amazingly given the circumstances, everything seems to be spot on except for a cooling oddity.
On taking the car home (about a 7 hour drive with no chance of an AA or garage assist) About 20 minutes after running the “Coolant Low” warning comes on the dash, so I pull over and top up about 3/4 litre to the float thingy bobs up, and drive off looking for some sort of assist. 20 mins later the warning comes on the dash, but with nowhere to stop (on a toll road around a volcano. In East Java) I carry on with wary eye on the temp and any signs of steam from bonnet. Nothing happens and no more warning lights. We pull over about 2 hours later at the first service stop and again I top up the water, and again it only takes 3/4 litre.
We head off and basically rince and repeat. Does not seem to affect the engine temp or perceivable running of the car, but it’s obviously not right.
Any ideas as it’s got me foxed.

My e60 was very temperamental if it dropped a little bit. My issue turned out to be a rubber o ring leaking a bit on a hose. Your jeep is leaking but from where I don't know. Best option is keep the heaters on hot while driving, if they go cold stop. But get it to a garage and pressure test it. That'll find your leak be it a hose, water pump , rad or gasket of some kind

Thats the odd bit, the leak seems to stop after 3/4 litre ... Cheers for the tips though, something like an O Ring could be a likely culprit!
Think i will pass on the heater thing, its 35c at night here ...
It would seem that opening ones eyes helps in the trouble shooting. Topped the water up in calmer circumstances today and noticed that the road caplooks like this

Been an hour and no puddles under it so fingers crossed! New part on order from BMW Bali and pissup scheduled for next week. Here comes one 200km / 5 hour drive (roads ain’t that good out here) to collect said part.
