Summer tyres for a G31 530d
Discussion
Hi
I know the snow has not even arrived yet, but I am already thinking about summer tyres for next year.
I have had the car since mid summer this year and it came with runflat Michelin Primacy 3 tyres. The plan was always to run the Primacy 3 tyres until winter, put on some winter wheels and tyres and then get some Michelin PS4 tyres next spring. I hate runflats and the Primacys were already starting to annoy me just before I put the winters on at the end of November.
The wheels are the standard 19" M Sport multispokes. The size of the Primacys are 245/40 R19 98Y for the fronts and 275/35 R19 100Y for the rears.
Problem is, there doesn't seem to be any 275/35 R19 100Y PS4 in the country right now and Michelin UK themselves don't know what the issue is (they admitted there was an issue) and they don't know when they will get more stock in. The fronts are readily available though.
Following watching and reading a few reviews, I then thought about the PS4S. They are apparently just as good in the wet as the PS4 - I was worried that as they were a bit more track orientated, they would not be as good in the wet. There doesn't seem to be a material difference between the two in the wet according to the reviews. 275/35 R19 PS4S are difficult to get hold of at the moment, but I have found a couple of places which still have stock. The problem with the PS4S though is that Michelin do not make them in 245/40 R19 98Y size.
So, my question is, would it be a silly idea to put PS4 on the front and PS4S on the rear or would this be fine? Or, alternatively, would it be ok to diverge from BMW's recommended tyre sizes for the 19" wheels and go for different sized tyres (if that is actually possible) or would doing this be a stupid idea.
Only other options are to wait until March and hope Michelin have made some more 275/35 PS4 tyres or go with a different brand. The Conti Sport Contact 6 and the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3s seem to be the next best tyres on average.
Any advice / comments welcome.
